WASHINGTON?? Identity theft and other scams cost Americans $1.52 billion last year, the Federal Trade Commission said on Tuesday.
In a nationwide sampling of consumer complaints, law enforcement and other agencies received 1.8 million complaints last year, up from 1.4 million in 2010 and double the level in 2006, the FTC said in a statement. Identity theft remained the top category.
The increase reflects the growing number of agencies that contributed to the Consumer Sentinel Network, a database that is the basis of the report, rather than an upturn in fraud, David Torok, head of the FTC's planning and communications unit, told Reuters.
Identity theft "has been our No. 1 complaint generator for the past five years, and that seems to be consistent" at 15 percent of complaints last year, he said.
Fraudsters increasingly are using the Internet and email to carry out scams or identity theft rather than by telephone or mail, Torok said.
"The old-fashioned 'the check is in the mail' is going down," he said.
The FTC said almost a million complaints last year were fraud related, with $1.52 billion paid out. The median amount was $537, the statement said.
Not all victims of fraud report it to government agencies.

Colorado is the state with the highest per capita rate of reported fraud and other types of complaints, followed by Delaware and Maryland.
Government documents or benefits fraud was the most common form of reported identity theft, at just over one in four cases, the FTC said.

Not using the tone knob and volume knob: it is mind blowing how often those are overlooked. A volume knob, does not only affect the volume: it also affects tone a bit.

All that being said: it is impossibly not to put your personality in your playing, cause your sound is the result of your personality. Without going at great length into spiritual meanings related to music, the message is clear: your sound will change and improve as you keep working on and developing your personality. If you want to improve your groove, work on becoming a more relaxed person. If you want to sound more emotional, deep, expressive and passionate, learn to dare to be vulnerable, which comes down to learning to let go of the need to be controlling. If you want to play more from the heart, get rid of your ego. If you feel you?re in your head too much, overthinking things constantly: learn to become the kind of person who focuses on the moment instead. If you have a weak, wimpy tone, become a more confident person. You can be whoever you want to be, and your sound is going to keep improving as a result of the choices you make. ?

On the flight back from last week?s Council on Foundations Family Foundations conference in Miami Beach, I found myself sitting next to a financially successful real estate person. When he found out what I do, he lost no time in indulging 2 predictable topics familiar to those of us on the giving side of the philanthropy table: first, and not the topic for this posting, he solicited me for a pet charity. At least twice. Second, he expressed his cynicism that people really ever give for altruistic reasons. He told me the story of a recent solicitation for a well known public charity which totally turned him off. [Admittedly, there was a generational disconnect which explained the story but that was more evident to me than to him, and also not the subject of this post] He then launched into a challenge about why, really, do people give to charity. Ego, taxes, public recognition were high on his list; doing good was pretty low.
What i find is that those who ask that question are rarely active or generous funders themselves. They, at least many, indulge that line of reasoning, i suspect, to create a self justifying smokescreen for their own reluctance to give. Or they are finance related folks who measure success by the bottom line of what one has, not by what one gives.
Thanks to many of my colleagues in the academic and advisory world, a lot is known about donor motivation. What is certainly clear is that almost no one gives for only one reason. Those who would dismiss altruistic intent by referring to named gifts as ego driven may be overlooking the authentic wish to leverage their giving by going public with their philanthropic priority. Those who wish to dismiss philanthropic intent by referring to tax benefits may be forgetting that in philanthropy, money is being given away, not protected for oneself by other equally accessible vehicles.
Frankly, from my perspective, it is largely irrelevant why someone chooses to become philanthropic. Who am I to question if their motivations are pure? And what if they aren?t? As long as it is not a matter of money or reputation laundering, so what? If people choose to give of their resources for the public good, let that be applauded for its accomplishment, not questioned for its motivation.? And most telling, over the years of advising or teaching literally 100?s of funders and philanthropists, this is never a question which comes from them.
Of course, donor motivation is not the same as donor intent. Unlike the question of funder motivation, donor intent is worthy of a good deal of thought and self awareness. What someone wishes to accomplish with or by his or her gift matters a lot. If well thought-through and carefully articulated, donor intent makes the difference between a gratified funder who makes a thoughtful gift and a dissatisfied donor with a marginally successful grant.? It can make the difference between an engaged, empowered family and one adrift with internal strife and competition.?? Donor intent can inform future generations? ability to steward values from generation to generation, or become an albatross over their decision making.
Any of us who work in this field know full well that donor intent is usually nuanced and often complex.? Understanding, intuiting, and articulating this intent matters.? Often a lot.
Questioning why someone might choose to give is a dead-end exercise; understanding what one wishes to do with one?s commitment to give is worthy of care and thought.? There is a big difference.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - U.S. corporations have far less cash on hand to invest than popularly believed - but enough to provide a significant economic stimulus and renewed employment growth in the midst of a tepid economic recovery, concludes a new study by University of Maryland economic researchers.
The study projects that if corporations invested their "excess" cash reserves in capital projects, it could generate as many as 2.4 million jobs over the next three years.
"We estimate that non-financial corporations are holding about $508 billion in excess cash, about one-fourth the size of the 'cash hoard' figures regularly thrown around in the U.S. media," says University of Maryland economist Jeffrey Werling, executive director of the Inforum Research Center. "However, this is still more than three percent of gross domestic product (GDP). Spending even a fraction of these cash reserves on capital investment could substantially boost economic growth and employment."
The Inforum study was commissioned by the UN's International Labour Organization (ILO) as part of its Global Employment Trends 2012. The ILO asked Inforum to project how increased corporate investment could help accelerate the U.S. recovery.
"It's not surprising that U.S. industry would be tight-fisted given the highly uncertain economic environment, but the consequence is a low level of total investment, economic growth and job creation," Werling explains.
"Now, as government fiscal austerity hampers U.S. economic growth, new private spending becomes essential to close the employment gap," he adds. "Investment in new plant and equipment could help pick up the slack from reduced government expenditure, boosting payrolls and providing a much-needed jolt to economic activity."
PROJECTIONS
Using its dynamic model of the U.S. national economy, the Maryland team estimated that expenditure of all the $508 million cash reserve in industry operations across three years starting in 2012 could:
Add an additional 2.4 million jobs by 2014, reducing the unemployment rate 1.5 percent;
Increase U.S. GDP one per cent in 2012, 1.5 per cent in 2013, and 1.6 per cent in 2014.
A more conservative assumption that only half of the excess cash reserves are spent on capital investment creates more than 1 million new jobs over 2012 to 2013, the study finds.
INFRASTRUCTURE BANK
A second scenario envisions creation of an "Infrastructure Bank" into which companies could invest a portion of their cash. Bank deposits would support infrastructure investment projects throughout the economy.
A key feature is the introduction of a tax amnesty program for companies' overseas cash, enacted with a requirement that repatriated funds be invested for three years in an infrastructure bank. These resources would be made available to support a variety of public infrastructure improvement projects throughout the economy. The assumption is that investment in state, local, and federal structures would increase by a total of $250 billion between 2013 and 2016.
This investment is projected to boost GDP about 0.8 per cent in 2014 and 2015, providing employment for an additional 1.1 million workers, the study concludes.
CASH HOARD ESTIMATE
Inforum estimated excess cash holdings among U.S. corporations by comparing current and historical ratios of liquid assets to current liabilities. The current ratio was found to be more than 14 percent greater than the historical average, implying that $508 billion of cash holdings are beyond levels needed for normal operations.
