Dave prepared the morning breakfast of toasted bread, eggs, noodle, baked beans and coffee. While waiting for my high school friend, Jenny Chuah to come over to meet us, Dave and Gerard took the boat out into the Canning River. We spent the day of family picnicking and boating by the Canning River together with Dave?s brother, sister-in-law, children and grandchildren.

As usual, Dave?s spirit session started at 4.30 pm and followed by wine. For another good dinner it was grilled beef and sausages. I too helped out to cook a prawn dish. Monica invited my friend Jenny Chuah and hubby Kelvin Tan for dinner. Jenny Chuah is from Teluk Intan, Perak and Kelvin Tan is from Malacca, Malaysia ? both migrated to Perth in the late seventies.

Violence stalks women workers in Afghanistan

KABUL (Reuters) - Muzhgan Masoomi's attacker stabbed her 14 times with a thick blade used to slaughter animals, tearing wide gashes in her flesh before leaving the government worker for dead on the outskirts of the Afghan capital.

With a severe limp and no control over her bladder - caused by the blade scraping her spinal cord - the 22-year-old can no longer work at the Ministry of Public Works, where she was a financial assistant before the assault.

Women who pursue careers in ultra-conservative Afghanistan often face opposition in a society where often they are ostracized - or worse, brutalized - for mixing with men other than husbands or relatives.

Despite commitments to better the rights of women 11 years into the NATO-led war, some say the authorities need to do more to prevent violence against women who work, particularly in government roles.

There are now fears that as the 2014 deadline looms for most foreign troops to leave, opportunities for women in the public sphere could shrink as confidence weakens in the face of continuing violence.

"I have no enemies, no links to gangs, and look what has happened to me. The situation for women in this country is getting worse day by day," Masoomi told Reuters in her brightly lit home, a few minutes' walk from where she was stabbed.

Shaking her long black ponytail, Masoomi said of her assailant: "He didn't like women working out of the house". He threatened her with menacing phone calls and text messages in the months leading up to the attack.

Her parents said the attacker, a relative who worked as a policeman, was now behind bars over the stabbing.

The security concerns of male government workers are taken more seriously than those of women, said Colonel Sayed Omar Saboor, deputy director for gender and human rights at the Interior Ministry.

"Women who work are much bigger targets than men and the government needs to acknowledge this," Saboor said.

How well female government workers are protected was called into question in July when a suicide bomber targeted and killed Hanifa Safi, regional head of women's affairs in eastern Laghman province.

Authorities ignored repeated requests for protection, her family said afterwards. Laghman officials declined to comment.

"She was so worried about her future. The only time someone in the police even addressed the issue of her security was once the Taliban had killed her," said her son, Mohammad Tabriz Safi, 30.

NO SUPPORT

Officially the government must provide security - usually two bodyguards - for ministers, members of parliament and tribal elders, said Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi.

But women not in those senior roles, such as Safi or Masoomi, are in dire need of protection simply because of their gender, Saboor said.

But Sediqqi said it would be "very difficult" for the police to provide security and guards for everyone who works in government. There are about 74,000 women out of 363,000 state employees.

Muzhgan has only recently gathered enough strength to talk about her ordeal, which happened in late March.

With a degree in accounting and some English, Masoomi was a valuable asset to her ministry, where she worked on a UN-funded Afghanistan Peace and Reintegration Programme, bringing former Taliban fighters from the battlefield back into jobs.

But she said not a single person from her ministry came to help her, or gave encouragement after the attack.

"They didn't even come to see me. Financially, morally, I got nothing," she said, adding that members of NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) took her to the hospital.

If she does not soon go abroad for surgery, she may never be able to work again. The ministry's deputy, Ahmad Farhad Waheed, said it had asked ISAF to look after her treatment, but the force said it was not down to them.

Afghan women have won back basic rights in education, voting and employment since the Taliban were ousted from power in 2001, but there is concern such freedoms will not be protected and may even be traded away as Kabul seeks a peace deal with the group.

"If a political solution between the Taliban and the government is reached, there is no doubt that women will need to be better protected," said Maria Bashir, the chief prosecutor for Herat province bordering Iran.

The only female prosecutor general in the country, Bashir has been threatened repeatedly and come under attack twice, when her house was set alight and another one firebombed.

Eight bodyguards escort Bashir to work each day, and six live in her house. All are paid for by the international community, she said.

Books in FTM 2012 - Family Tree Maker software - Family History ...

I have a question that I am not finding a simple answer for. Does the newest version of FTM have the option to build books that you can self-publish as the earlier version (I think I had v16) did? I am inferring from several of the posts that it does.
I moved away from FTM when it no longer had that option and while I am content with what I am using now, I prefer the "look" of the reports and some of the other features in FTM, but really need this publishing feature.
I've ordered a new laptop and will be receiving it in the coming week, so was looking at possibly going back to FTM with this move.

Mitsubishi targets growth of tiny property funding business

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan's top trading house Mitsubishi Corp <8058.T> is expanding its small real estate financing business to benefit from rising property purchases by foreign investors in the country and an expected jump in refinancing of loans, a senior executive said.

Diamond Realty Management Inc, a real estate asset management firm wholly owned by Mitsubishi, aims to raise 10 billion yen ($128 million) from Japanese investors in a second fund as early as March to provide mezzanine financing for deals, Diamond Realty's CEO-designate Takashi Tsuji said in an interview.

Mezzanine loans, subordinated to senior debt provided by banks, are used to stretch the amount of borrowing. They were popular during the pre-2008 crisis property boom in Japan when many assets were bought with highly leveraged financing.

After the property market burst in the financial crisis, many providers of mezzanine loans faded away.

But such financing could be in demand now when the property market in Tokyo has started picking up and foreigners are eyeing buying properties.

Angelo Gordon & Co, the $24 billion New York-based asset manager, bought in June the 13-storey Aoyoma Bell Commons property in Tokyo's posh Aoyama district, while MGPA, an Australian property investment firm, bought eight office buildings in the same month for around 12 billion yen.

"It is true that the Japanese banks are willing to lend money, so senior loans are accessible," said Tsuji, who is currently Diamond Realty's chief operating officer and will become its chief executive in November. The company manages about 550 billion yen in assets.

"However there is still a limit for senior lending when the balance of the loans and property value is considered. Mezzanine loans are instrumental in filling the gap between senior loans and equity."

Diamond Realty will approach Japanese pension funds, regional banks and corporations for the fund-raising, Tsuji said. Its first fund, set up in October last year, also raised a similar amount.

REFINANCING OPPORTUNITIES

Mezzanine loans generate higher returns than senior loans, which is good for investors seeking alternative investments when the stock markets are stagnant and bond yields remain low, Tsuji said.

A large amount of loans maturing would create refinancing needs, Tsuji added.

Moody's Investors Service expected about 500 billion yen of loans, which are repackaged as commercial mortgage backed securities, would mature this year, a reflection of the hangover from the last property boom in 2007 when a record 2 trillion yen of CMBS were issued.

Diamond Realty will also start managing its first private real estate trust next month, which is expected to expand to as large as 250 billion yen in five years, said Tsuji.

The REIT will initially start with three assets in retail, logistics and residential properties, worth 32 billion yen, he said.

Mitsubishi's financial business, which includes real estate financing, posted a net profit of 2.9 billion yen for the three months ended June 30, up nearly six-fold from the same period of the previous year. The whole company's net profit for the latest quarter was 98.1 billion yen. ($1 = 77.6950 Japanese yen)

Probiotic for babies may not fight allergies later

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Kindergartners who were given "good bacteria" supplements as infants were no less likely to suffer from allergies than other kids in a new study from Australia.

The findings, reported in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, add to a mixed bag of results from research into whether probiotics can help ward off kids' allergies.

Based on what's known so far, it may be that only certain probiotics are helpful for certain kids - but even then, the benefit seems "very modest," according to Dr. Sonia Michail, a pediatric gastroenterologist at Children's Hospital Los Angeles who was not involved in the work.

The 123 kids in this study, which was led by Marie P. Jensen of the University of Western Australia in Perth, were part of a clinical trial as infants, when researchers randomly assigned half to take a probiotic supplement every day for the first six months of life. The rest of the babies were given a placebo.

All of the babies were considered to be at increased risk of allergies because their mothers suffered from them.

In earlier studies, the researchers found no benefits of the probiotic when the babies were 1 to 2.5 years old.

This latest report finds still no effects at the age of 5. Of 66 kids who had received the probiotic in infancy, 44 percent had some type of allergy - such as nasal allergies, food allergies or asthma. That compared with 38 percent of 57 kids who got the placebo.

Probiotics are live microorganisms, usually bacteria, which are naturally present in the gut, and are often added to certain foods, like yogurt and fermented milk, or sold as supplements.

In theory, probiotics given early in life could help curb kids' allergy risk by ensuring a healthy balance of microbes in the intestines, which promotes normal immune function.

Allergies arise when the immune system overreacts to a normally benign substance.

One of the best known and widely used probiotics is Lactobacillus acidophilus - which is what kids in this study were given.

The findings are somewhat surprising, Michail said in an email, because some studies have found that probiotics may help curb certain kids' long-term risk of the allergic skin condition eczema.

But in those studies, the probiotics were different strains of friendly bacteria (L. rhamnosus GG in one study, and a probiotic mix in the other).

And they were given not only to infants, but to their moms starting about a month before delivery, noted Michail, who has researched the role of gut bacteria in kids' health.

What's more, one study found probiotic benefits only among kids who'd been born by C-section.

"Interestingly, the intestine of a baby just born does not have any bacteria, but this quickly changes and the intestine becomes populated by large numbers of bacteria called ?flora,'" Michail said.

Babies born via C-section are not exposed to their moms' beneficial bacteria in the birth canal, and studies have linked C-section birth to a higher allergy and asthma risk.

The "different bacterial profile" in babies born by C-section "may be permissive to the development of allergies," Michail explained.

But the bottom line is that even in the positive studies, the benefits of probiotics seem small.

In the U.S., the Food and Drug Administration classifies probiotics as a food or dietary supplement. That means the products don't have to be proven effective before hitting the market, but they cannot be promoted for treating or preventing any specific disease.

Marchionne keeps ACEA presidency after VW spat

PARIS (Reuters) - Sergio Marchionne, president of European carmakers' association ACEA, said he had not resigned that role at a board meeting on Friday after calls by German automaker Volkswagen for him to go.

Marchionne's repeated calls for co-ordinated production capacity cuts to help alleviate Europe's car market crisis have highlighted a division between Europe's money-losing mass market carmakers, including Fiat , of which Marchionne is chief executive, and their better-performing German rivals.

A sparring match between Marchionne and Volkswagen began with remarks Marchionne made in a newspaper interview about the German carmaker.

Marchionne said after the board meeting at the Paris auto show: "We're good friends," referring to Volkswagen Chief Executive Martin Winterkorn, as they embraced for a photo.

Marchionne said on Thursday he would be prepared to resign from ACEA if he lost support of the board. He told Reuters late on Thursday he was not expecting any "fireworks", however.

Marchionne suggested in a New York Times interview in July that Volkswagen was undercutting competitors by engaging in a price war in Europe, where manufacturers are struggling, leading to a call by Volkswagen for Marchionne to resign from his ACEA role.

New York City's new sugary drink rules, exceptions

The New York City Board of Health passed a rule Thursday banning sales of large sodas and other sugary drinks in restaurants, delis and movie theaters in the hopes of combating obesity. Here are the rules and the exceptions. They take effect in March.

? WHAT'S BANNED: Sweetened drinks in containers larger than 16 ounces. A range of popular sweetened beverages, including energy drinks, presweetened ice teas and common brands of nondiet soda will be affected.

? EXCEPTIONS: Beverages that are less than 25 calories per 8 ounces, more than 50 percent milk or 100 percent fruit or vegetable juice. Starbucks is pondering whether large Frappuccinos might fall under that exemption, except that it is made with a large amount of blended ice, which probably knocks the milk content down under 50 percent.

? CUP SIZE: Cafeterias and fast-food restaurants with self-serve soda fountains will be prohibited from giving out cups larger than 16 ounces, but people will still be allowed to refill their cup multiple times. Sit-down restaurants will no longer be allowed to serve pitchers of soda to customers.

? WHO'S AFFECTED: Only establishments that receive inspection grades from the health department would have to obey the rules, a group that includes movie theaters and stadium concession stands. Convenience stores, including 7-Eleven and its king-size "Big Gulp" drinks, would be exempt, along with vending machines and some newsstands. Beverages sold in supermarkets or most convenience stores are not affected.

? IN QUESTION: Iced coffee may be problematic. Many cafes now sweeten the beverage with liquefied sugar before handing it over to the customer, often in a giant cup, largely filled with ice cubes. Under the new rules, customers might have to add the sweetener themselves to avoid a violation.

? ENFORCEMENT: Will be carried out by New York City's army of restaurant inspectors. Violations uncovered during those inspections will lead to a $200 fine.

Do Plant-Derived Agrofuels Create More Problems Than They Solve?

Dear EarthTalk: What are ?agrofuels,? and why are organizations like Friends of the Earth critical about their use??Bill Wilson, Boise, Idaho

Agrofuels, also known as biofuels (e.g., ethanol, biodiesel), are fuels derived from plants instead of from oil or other fossil fuels. What makes them appealing to environmentalists and others, at least in theory, is the fact that they can be a carbon-neutral energy source.

Plants take in and store carbon dioxide (CO2) during the process of photosynthesis. When plants die, whether through natural causes or when humans harvest them, this stored CO2 is released back into the atmosphere in an age-old cycle that doesn?t contribute any additional greenhouse gas into the system. But when we extract and burn oil and other fossil fuels, we are taking CO2 that would have otherwise remained locked up deep below the Earth?s surface and releasing it into the atmosphere, essentially overloading the planet?s carbon balance and leading to more global warming.

But as things stand today, the overall process of producing agrofuels is far from carbon neutral, given the fossil fuels expended in growing, harvesting and processing the crops (petroleum-based fertilizers and pesticides, diesel fuel to run tractors, etc?) and then distributing them (via carbon-spewing trucks, trains, ships and airplanes). Of course, growing such crops organically and processing and distributing them without fossil fuels would help close the gap between today?s reality and the dream of carbon-neutrality.

Another major hurdle for agrofuels is the fact that harvesting crops across millions of acres for fuel instead of for food would leave many hungry mouths to feed in the U.S. and elsewhere. Researchers are hoping to overcome this conundrum by generating agrofuels from less land- and input-intensive ?crops? such as switchgrass, sugarcane, wood waste or even algae. The latter ?feedstock? is especially promising because it can be grown in non-traditional agricultural settings including indoor labs and even on off-shore ocean platforms. But regardless of the wow factor, producing small quantities of fuel from such experimental crops costs hundreds times more than getting oil to gas pumps, so researchers have a long way to go before agrofuels made from these nouveau source crops can make inroads into the mainstream.

Given the issues with producing agrofuels domestically, suppliers are increasingly looking to source them abroad, essentially trading one set of foreign fuel producers for another. But according to Friends of the Earth International (FOEI), ?Land grabbing by large companies and agro-businesses to the detriment of local livelihoods, forests and other ecosystems, with gross violations of human rights, have been witnessed in many countries where agrofuels are produced.? FOEI adds: ?The production of agrofuels?is generating serious environmental damage and eroding the people?s ability to control the production, trade and consumption of food, given that more and more agricultural land is being devoted for energy crops.?

As recently as five years ago environmentalists were hailing agrofuels as a viable alternative to fossil fuels in the face of increased global warming and skyrocketing oil prices. But as the agrofuels industry starts to grow up, many are wondering whether or not pursuing such a baggage-laden alternative is really worth the trouble, especially in light of more promising developments in other sectors of the renewable fuels sector.

Murray caps Britain's golden sports summer

LONDON (AP) ? First came the victory in the Tour de France. Then there were the stacks of medals at a dazzling Olympics at home.

If that weren't enough to lift the country's spirits, Britain basked in another milestone Tuesday to cap this magical sports summer.

Yes, at long last, after 76 years of wait and frustration, Britain has a men's Grand Slam tennis champion.

Andy Murray beat Novak Djokovic in five sets in the U.S. Open final, giving Britain yet one more reason to wave the flag again. The feel-good glow began with national celebrations of Queen Elizabeth II's "Diamond Jubilee" of 60 years on the throne and peaked during the last six weeks of Olympic and Paralympic fervor.

Murray's victory ? completed while most of Britain was asleep ? came just hours after more than 1 million people lined the streets of London to cheer the nation's Olympians and Paralympians in a two-hour parade marking the end of the 2012 Games.

"The forecast ... was made yesterday that the great summer of British sport was over, but he's given us another immense prize to wake up to," Prime Minister David Cameron said.

After losing in four previous Grand Slam finals, Murray outlasted defending champion Djokovic 7-6 (10), 7-5, 2-6, 3-6, 6-2 after nearly five hours on Monday to become the first British man to win a Slam since Fred Perry captured the Wimbledon and the U.S. Championships in 1936.

Finally, the "Fred Perry curse" has been broken ? although until Murray wins Wimbledon, it won't be fully put to rest.

"Thank God that's over. Thank God we can let Fred Perry lie easy. Thank God for Andy Murray," wrote the Guardian newspaper website.

Like Tim Henman before him, Murray had been dogged by the weight of expectations of the British public and media and the never-ending questions over when the Grand Slam drought would finally be broken.

"Now they won't ask me that stupid question any more" read the back page headline Tuesday in London's Evening Standard.

What a past few months it has been for Britain in the arena.

Chelsea won the Champions League. Bradley Wiggins became the first British rider to win the Tour de France. Rory McIroy won the PGA Championship by a record eight shots and established himself as golf's dominant player.

Above all, London hosted a hugely successful Olympics and Paralympics that captivated the country. Britain recorded its best Olympic showing in 104 years with 29 gold medals (including Murray in singles) and 65 medals in all. Britain celebrated the close of the Paralympics on Sunday after winning 120 medals, including 34 gold.

Now, Murray has become the first man to win the U.S. Open and Olympic gold in the same year.

"I'm absolutely delighted for him," Cameron said. "It's a huge achievement. For 76 years Britain has waited for a Grand Slam win in tennis and Andy has done it in huge style."

The victory came on the exact day ? Sept. 10 ? that Perry won the U.S. title in 1936. It also came in Murray's fifth Grand Slam final, following in the footsteps of his no-nonsense coach, Ivan Lendl, who lost in his first four Grand Slam finals before going on to win eight major titles.

For years, Murray has been considered just a rung below the "Big Three" of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Djokovic, who had shared 29 of the previous 30 major titles. Now he's joined the club and Britain is rejoicing.

Nowhere was the impact felt more deeply than in his Scottish hometown of Dunblane, a cathedral town and site of a mass shooting in 1996. Murray was 8 when a gunman opened fire at his elementary school, killing 16 children and a teacher. He didn't witness the actual carnage, but hid under a desk in the headmaster's study.

A noisy crowd of about 80 people packed into the bar at the Dunblane Hotel to watch the U.S. Open final that ended shortly after 2 a.m. British time. After Djokovic hit a forehand service return long on match point, the crowd erupted in cheers and chants of "There's only one Andy Murray.'"

"Andy is Dunblane's hero, not just Dunblane, the whole of Scotland and the rest of Britain," 63-year-old Gavin Noland told reporters at the bar.

Referring to Dunblane's shooting tragedy, 62-year-old Dave Whitton said: "It's a town where things have happened, but this brings a moment of joy and happiness instead of other things that have happened."

Murray's uncle, Neill Erskine, said he received a text message from Murray thanking the family for their support.

"There are a huge mixture of emotions in the family ? pride, relief, excitement," he said.

Murray's grandparents, Roy and Shirley Erskine, were among those who stayed up late to watch the match. His grandmother recalled his rambunctious ways as a child.

"He had a temper on him and would always stamp his foot and say, 'I've got to do better, I've got to do better.' But he focused that eventually and used his energy to play tennis," she said.

Murray did most of his tennis training as a youth in Barcelona but remains fiercely loyal to his Scottish roots. Two other famous Scots ? actor Sean Connery and Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson ? were among those in the stands cheering him on at Flushing Meadows.

"Now Olympic and U.S. Open champion, Andy truly is a Scottish sporting legend and I'm certain that more Grand Slam titles will follow," Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond said.

The end of the match came too late for many British newspapers, but Murray's triumph made some late editions.

"History Boy!" blared the tabloid Daily Mirror on the front page. On the sports pages, the Mirror launched a campaign for a Murray knighthood: "Arise Sir Andy: Grand Slam Glory at Last. Oh What a Knight."

British TV stations camped out early Tuesday at the modest Dunblane tennis courts where Murray got his start as a young boy, interviewing youngsters who said they were inspired by his triumph.

Murray and Lendl are the two men in the Open era, which began in 1968, to have lost their first four Grand Slam finals. Murray fell to Djokovic in the 2011 Australian Open, and against Federer at the 2008 U.S. Open, 2010 Australian Open and this year's Wimbledon.

It was Murray's decisive, straight-sets victory over Federer in the Olympic final in August on Centre Court at Wimbledon ? less than a month after the Wimbledon defeat ? that lifted his belief in himself and provided the platform for his Grand Slam success.

"Ever since he won the Olympics he has walked around with a lot more confidence," said Murray's former coach, Leon Smith. "After winning yesterday, it's going to do even more so now."

Former British player and U.S. Open finalist Greg Rusedski said Murray can only go higher.

"Having won this, he can go on to win many majors and maybe end the year as ... No. 1," he said.

Murray is ranked No. 4 but is close behind No. 3 Nadal. Djokovic is No. 1 in this week's rankings, with Federer dropping to No. 2.

"We are all delighted for Andy," Wimbledon chairman Philip Brook said. "Winning your first Grand Slam has to be a very special moment in a player's career, and it was a fantastic performance in an epic final to cap a truly memorable summer of tennis for him personally, and for British tennis."

FORTUNE, Newfoundland (AP) ? Tropical Storm Leslie's stiff winds and heavy rains lashed Newfoundland as the storm made landfall Tuesday, knocking out power in several towns and forcing the cancellation of all flights at the island's main airport.

The potent storm touched down in Fortune, Newfoundland, at about 8:30 a.m. AST (7:30 a.m. EST, 1130 GMT) as it continued to barrel north-northeast at at about 40 mph (65 kph), the Canadian Hurricane Centre said.

Winds were still building, with the St. John's airport recording hurricane-force gusts of up to 81 mph (131 kph), while waves were reaching 10 yards (meters) at an offshore buoy. Several towns along eastern Newfoundland had already lost power and flights were cancelled before the hurricane made landfall Tuesday.

The Canadian Hurricane Centre predicted at least 12 hours of intense rain over the northeastern province's hilly terrain, which could generate rapid runoffs, said the agency's program supervisor Chris Fogarty. The center was warning of possible damage from toppled trees, flooded streets and downed power lines.

Leslie was not expected to be quite as ferocious as Hurricane Igor, which caused about CA$125 million (US$128.5 million) in damages and left some parts of Newfoundland without power for several days in 2010, the Halifax-based hurricane center said.

Forecaster Bob Robichaud of Environment Canada said Leslie was gaining strength as it moved over warm waters, but its massive size may prevent it from reaching hurricane status. Storm watches were in effect for most of Newfoundland.

"If it was a smaller storm, there would most definitely be strengthening and we'd almost certainly have a hurricane at landfall," he said. "But given the size of the storm, it takes a lot more to spin it up."

Bands of rain have been extending out ahead of Leslie, dousing some areas on the Burin and Avalon peninsulas with sheets of rain.

Environment Canada has issued weather alerts for the entire island of Newfoundland, with tropical storm warnings and hurricane watches in the south and east. The rest of the island is mostly under rainfall or wind warnings. The storm is expected to brush into southern Labrador.

Power was knocked out throughout the provincial capital of St. John's and communities along the southeastern coast of the Avalon peninsula, and all flights at the airport were cancelled. Striking airport workers who briefly picketed outside braved powerful wind gusts that picked up a port-a-potty tied down by a rope.

The Newfoundland legislature was closed Tuesday, along with schools across the island. Marine Atlantic cancelled ferry crossings to Nova Scotia, while some domestic ferries also tied up to weather out the storm.

Badger, a small town in central Newfoundland, declared a state of emergency as a precaution, Mayor Michael Patey said. Some homes have been evacuated.

Leslie was also expected to drench parts of Prince Edward Isle and Nova Scotia, where rain warnings were also issued.

Red Cross spokesman Dan Bedell said supplies and additional people have been taken to the Burin Peninsula, on the south coast of the island, where Igor pounded Newfoundland as a Category 1 hurricane almost two years ago. Igor dumped eight inches (20 centimeters) of rain. The hurricane was also blamed for one death.

Nasty weather had already battered Atlantic Canada before Leslie's arrival. The center said a trough of low pressure had already dumped heavy rain on parts of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.

Evacuation orders were issued Monday for Truro, Nova Scotia, where sheets of heavy rain caused two rivers to spill their banks as several dikes gave way, leading to flooding in Colchester County.

Fire and Emergency Services worked Monday to shore up resources to ensure crews are ready to deal with the storm. Crews were trying to make sure that culverts and ditches were cleared to facilitate rapid runoffs, said Newfoundland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman Cheryl Gullage.

"We've warned people to stay away from fast moving bodies of water," Gullage said. "We've taken preparedness measures within our control to mitigate large damages but we have no idea how this will impact until it actually hits." She added that authorities are prepared to move people to shelters if necessary.

Patricia Devine, of Clarenville in southeastern Newfoundland, nervously hunkered down just two years after Igor caused more than CA$25,000 (US$25,600) in flood damage to her home.

"All over this town trees were down, an awful lot of people got flooded basements. Oh, it was awful," she said. "In fact, I'm very nervous. I'm saying a lot of prayers."

She was among many residents who spent Monday buying food, water and gasoline, checking sump pumps, preparing generators and making sure they had flashlights, batteries and emergency contact numbers at hand.

Also in the Atlantic, Michael weakened to a tropical storm early Tuesday with maximum sustained winds near 65 mph (100 kph). Additional weakening was expected and the storm was expected to fizzle out in about a day. The storm was not a threat to land.

PARIS (AP) ? The younger daughter of a British-Iraqi couple slain while vacationing in the French Alps has returned to Britain, while her badly wounded older sister has come out of an artificial coma, authorities said Sunday.

Four-year-old Zeena and 7-year-old Zaina survived a vicious shooting that killed their parents, Saad and Iqbal al-Hilli, as well as a still-unidentified older woman and a French man who apparently happened to be passing by on his bicycle.

French police have been scrambling to hunt down leads since Wednesday's rampage, while relatives of the couple arrived in France to take care of the girls. Authorities say they are probing whether an alleged financial dispute between Saad al-Hilli and his brother Zaid played a role, though the surviving brother has denied any conflict.

Eric Maillaud, the prosecutor for Annecy near where the shootings occurred, told The Associated Press in a text message that Zeena had returned to Britain along with two relatives.

The older daughter, Zaina, was shot in the shoulder and took violent blows to the head during the attack. She underwent two operations and had been placed in a medically induced coma. She has come out of the coma but remains on sedatives and cannot yet talk to investigators, Maillaud wrote Sunday.

Depending on what she remembers, the 7-year-old could prove crucial to the investigation.

Meanwhile, French and British police spent a second day searching the couple's U.K. home in Claygate, a suburb of London.

Surrey Police said the force is supplying resources from its major crime team, which works jointly with Sussex Police, as well as forensic officers, search teams and translators. The force said dozens of British officers are assisting with the French-led investigation but that the number fluctuates depending on needs.

Saad and Iqbal al-Hilli and the two other people killed were each shot twice in the head, along with suffering other wounds. Zeena survived unhurt by hiding under her mother's skirt as some 25 automatic-handgun rounds were fired at the family car.

Because PayPal for iPhone has attempted to be a mobile payment service, it has a standard geolocation feature that lets you find merchants nearby who accept it. I tried the app in New York City and found a dearth of retailers. Usually, in reviewing mobile payment apps, I have to add a disclaimer about how New York surely has greater support for such a service than you're likely to find in more suburban or rural areas, but with PayPal, the selection was so limited I can't imagine it would be more slender anywhere else.

I found a coffee shop within two miles, but on searching for it online (I had never heard of it before and wanted more information before showing up), I learned it had closed. There was a lawyer nearby who took PayPal, a consulting service, and The Richard J. Fox Foundation for prostate cancer. A lot of the vendors looked like single-person small businesses whose "locations vary" rather than those set up in brick-and-mortar offices and retail outlets.

If you do manage to find a business that accepts PayPal, paying for a purchase works similarly to how Pay With Square handles it. You find the business in the app, slide a toggle on screen to allow the merchant to see your username, and then tell the cashier what that username is. The cashier will then choose your username from an available list, and thus charge your account.

Paying with PayPal in stores isn't all it's cracked up to be, but swapping money among friends is. PayPal's mobile app makes it even more convenient and easy to pay back a friend for dinner or a movie ticket in seconds. As long as you have the person's email address associated with his or her PayPal account, you can initiate a transfer in a few taps. It's simple and straightforward. You can also request funds from a specific person, which is useful for reminding leeches of the money they owe you.

The ability to transfer money among friends isn't wholly unique to PayPal (you can find it in Bump for iPhone, ING Direct bank's mobile app, and in a few others), but it isn't a feature in all the other mobile wallet solutions. You can't give or receive money to or from another individual using Pay With Square, LevelUp, or Google Wallet.

Security
PayPal's app only partially passed muster in terms of security. It gets a lot of security measures right, but gets one big option wrong.

As mentioned, all the usual PayPal Purchase Protection coverage applies?and it is superb. Everyone I know who uses PayPal says they trust it more than any other credit card company or bank, bar none. That consumer confidence is certainly not to be discounted.

The app also offers options for how you can log in. To set up the app, you have to enter your PayPal username and password. You can continue using as your PayPal credentials to log on, or switch to a numerical PIN, which requires authenticating your iPhone's phone number. When I tried to switch to the latter method, I opted to authenticate my phone via text message. PayPal sends you a text with details on how to reply, and that should be the end of that. But it failed. When I replied, I received back this message: "PayPal: PayPal Mobile isn't available. Try again later" (see the slideshow). I followed the alternative instructions?use PayPal's website ?and received another message soon after confirming my device had been added to my PayPal account. Despite the hiccup with the servers, the option to use either a PIN or your PayPal username and password is solid.

But there is one major hole in the PayPal iPhone app's security: The app never logs you out automatically. Most mobile payment apps log out the user after a few minutes. That's how Google Wallet (for select Android phones only) works, for example. After a specified period of time, you have to re-enter your PIN no matter what. In PayPal for iPhone, though, the timeout period is exceptionally long. The app only locked me out due to a timeout once, and only when the phone was on and active the whole time. If you simply close the app, it doesn't log you out, and it doesn't seem to count toward the timeout period. To fully log out, you have go into the settings and press "Log Out." Closing the app doesn't do the trick, but I definitely think it should. Say I close the app and turn off my phone, but someone else picks it up and re-launches the app; the app would still be in the open state. The person could easily get into my PayPal account to request or send money without ever having to enter the PIN.

What a miscreant with my phone could not do, however, is mess with my bank accounts or other financial information connected to PayPal. From the app, you can't even add a new account, leaving you pretty well stuck if you forget to notify PayPal that you have a new account. You can only add new accounts through the PayPal website. Other mobile apps in the money-management space do allow you to add new accounts from the app, namely Adaptu Wallet and Pageonce (two personal finance apps), without any security concerns, so it is possible.

PayPal Among Friends
PayPal could have been a contender among mobile payment systems, but it doesn't have enough support on the business side?at least not in New York, a city that is more likely to over-represent businesses than under-represent them. In other words, if PayPal isn't well supported by businesses in New York, it's highly unlikely to be popular elsewhere. If your family and friends use PayPal, though, for its excellent consumer protection, then the iPhone app may come in handy for initiating or requesting payments on the go.
