Chris Weidman?s house damaged in Hurricane Sandy

As the country starts to clean up from the devastation from Hurricane Sandy, a UFC fighter will be part of the group who has to deal with wrecked homes. UFC middleweight Chris Weidman's home was damaged when the storm hit Long Island.

UFC light heavyweight Ryan Bader, who has the same manager as Weidman, tweeted that Weidman's home was lost.

Weidman later spoke to MMA Fighting, and confirmed his home was severely damaged. The flooding was up to his chest in some places, and the first floor, backyard, garage and deck are destroyed.

"We lost a lot of stuff but as long as we are healthy that's all that matters. I actually documented a lot through video and pics. We had water up to my chest in some parts of my house."

He will need to deal with the clean up as he prepares for his next fight. Weidman is fighting Tim Boetsch at UFC 155 in late December.

BFTKT Blog | How You Can Protect Yourself From Debt Relief Scams

There is an increasing demand for debt relief programs. More and more people are getting into debt, and need help getting out. And more and more companies are advertising their services, making it harder to separate the good companies from the bad ones.

You?ve probably heard the horror stories about people getting ?ripped off? by companies that aren?t legitimate. The truth is that most debt relief programs are run by honest companies that will do what they promise. But like in any service industry, there are those companies that just care about making money, and don?t make customer service or satisfaction a priority.

debt relief scams companies Follow Me on Pinterest So you have to be extra careful in choosing your program as you may end up a victim of debt relief scams. Sure, there are many good companies out there that will help you get back on track.? But it is still hard to find the right one. Here are some tips on how you can protect yourself from getting ripped off:

Check Out The Company?s Background

The internet makes this much easier. You can?t just rely on a good looking website, with lots of official looking information & testimonials. The best way to do this is to check the business through the Better Business Bureau (BBB). Check on how many complaints have been filed, and how many have been addressed to the customer?s satisfaction. You can also do a search for the name of the company, and see what other people are saying about the company on financial forums and other websites. The info you can find, the better, as no news might not be good news, it just might mean the company hasn?t been around for very long.? So do your research.

Get Everything In Writing

While a debt relief company looks legitimate, it does not necessarily mean that you are in good hands. So make sure you read the agreements very carefully before your sign anything or send in any money. Even if the documents look confusing, read them. Or have a friend read them who might have a little more expertise or knowledge about personal finance. Either way, if it is not in writing do not assume anything is covered, so don?t just rely on the words of the people you talk to in the company. Even if they are honest, they might not know all the answers or be fully trained.

Ask Lots Of Questions

What types of questions should you ask? Anything you need to know in order to feel comfortable working with that company. Make sure you understand exactly how they do business, and how they will help you fix your debt problems. Here are some additional questions to ask. Is the company honest and transparent in dealing with their clients?? Does the company meet expectations and deliver results?? How do they handle customer service?

Here Are Common ?Red Flags? To Watch Out For

Here are the top red flags (warning signs) that will signal you to avoid the company or services:

  • If the company is more concerned about how much you can pay them, it is best to stay away and look for another.? This company will only exploit your situation to earn more profits, instead of helping you resolve your problem.? You are better off with companies that show genuine concern about your financial difficulties and debt problems.
  • Do not be blinded by super low quotations, or incredible savings you can get from enlisting the services of these companies.? Most likely, these companies are frauds.? They are just using their extreme low quotes to lure you into using their services and then after paying for the fees, leave you empty handed with your problem unresolved.
  • If the solution they offer is to wipe away all your debts, you are in the wrong hands.? Legitimate and reputable debt relief companies, no matter how much expertise and negotiating skills they have, can never arrange for a complete wipe out of your outstanding debts.? They can only make the payment more convenient and affordable for you.

Before thinking about getting professional help, check first if you can resolve the problem by yourself.? Sometimes, you may be able to fix your own financial difficulties. But if you decide it is best to hire a debt relief program, and then make sure that you do your part in protecting yourself so you don?t become the next victim of an avoidable scam!

Free Pets to Good Home ? Blog Archive ? You Are The Horse Herd ...

I have seen a large amount of horse owners get into a crisis because they did not take the trouble of finding out just what sort of relationship they should have established with their horses. You need to approach your relationship to your horse the same way you approach your relationship to your own child: the wrong approach may result in a spoilt brat. You have got to be careful about laying the right footing for a relationship that will endure all thru.

Want to know how you approach the entire thing? You start by facing up to the basics: you belong to the human species and your pony belongs to the equine one.

The largest blunder I see folk committing is they treat their horses as they might a human. That immediately starts causing problems. You can try and treat your horse as an equivalent to a very limited extent, because you?re the more equal of the two equals. To put it bluntly, horses are herd animals, they require a ?herd leader? to follow and be protected by, and for your pony, you start by being the boss. When you behave otherwise, you are giving him ideas you must absolutely not give him. You can either claim your position as the leader, or allow it to be eroded.

What you very definitely don?t need to be doing is to give your horse the assumption that he is your equal, or maybe ?heaven forbid? your better!

Right from the beginning, you want to set clear boundaries, very clearly defined lines that your pony can?t cross beyond. These lines should cover every aspect of the relationship, physical and mental. Surely, you?ve seen horses, which can weigh something like 1200 pounds to your less than 200 pounds, pushing people around with no respect? They do that because they weren?t taught by their owners to respect the boundaries of decorum. They were allowed to get the idea that they were as good or better than their human owners.

If you happen to feel any misunderstanding about the best way to approach your pony, take a while out to study a herd of horses. Watch the behavior patterns that prevail: the way the other horses are aware of and stick to their positions vis a vis the herd leader. Then get this straight in your head: you are the herd leader?s leader. You are the top figure on the totem pole.

I also submit that you obtain some books and videos about horse behaviour and get totally acquainted with their teachings!

You?ve got to be able to think like a horse to know how best to address him.

4 Productivity Tools to Efficiently Run Your Business | earningdiary ...

Productivity Tools for businessRunning a business entails a lot of work, and having the right business efficiency tools to take care of some of your back-office operations can free up your timetable quite a bit. This way, you can focus your time and attention on things that are more important. Choosing the right tools doesn?t have to be a difficult exercise, especially once you?re made aware that there are effective but free or cheap tools like the ones below that work as good as their expensive counterparts:

1. Bitrix24.com

Productivity tools are essential for a business to thrive, especially in this cut-throat business environment. But having to purchase them individually can mean a big dent in your operating budget. An all-in-one tool that can practically save you a good chunk of money sounds just about the thing you would need, more so if you?re just starting out.

Bitrix24.com, a social intranet application that?s totally free for companies with a maximum of 12 employees, comes loaded with several business tools in one platform ? social intranet, a fully functional CRM, project management, activity planner, calendar, workforce monitoring, file and document sharing, just to name a few. Bitrix24, cloud-based as it is, can be accessed anywhere and anytime via your computer or smartphone. For companies with more than 12 staff members, Bitrix24 offers a subscription package for unlimited users that starts at $99 per month.

2. JetRadar.com

Even when your business is still small, business travel may be required. When those instances arise, it pays to know that budget airlines and online ticketing sites have made air travel significantly more affordable than it was, say, a decade ago. The downside, however, you would have to scan multiple sites to find the best and cheapest deals. Fierce competition has forced some airlines to shut down, and those that still remain are no longer pitching their promos to price-comparison sites, which, in turn, prompts consumers to check out multiple websites.

Absolutely free, JetRadar.com is a metasearch engine that pores through hundreds of flight and airline sites for the best and cheapest plane fare promos, and makes the gathered data easily accessible by practically anyone in a single website, drastically limiting the time and energy it takes to find and book the most economically attractive airfare deal. JetRadar offers hotel and accommodation listings, too.

3. Comindware.com

Automation has changed the business landscape forever. Through automation, businesses save on costs, streamline their operations and maximize the resources they?ve got on hand ? manpower, equipment and infrastructure.

Designed specifically for cross-functional teams and workgroups, Comindware.com is a software innovation that automates workflow processes, tracking of issues and task management. Comindware?s Workflow Builder capability allows even those without previous IT or designing experience to visually create and/or edit workflow processes by simply dragging and dropping items in the dashboard. And with ElasticData, the technology the application is built upon, you can design and create your workflow process now and edit it later (if needed) without having to stop or interrupt ongoing workflow processes. Within minutes, you may already deploy your newly created/edited workflow process.

If you wish to witness for yourself how Comindware would fare in your own unique environment, it is available for download for free for 30 days. And when you deem it the necessary automation tool for your company?s needs, attractive discount rates are offered.

4. PickyDomains.com

In a marketplace peppered with hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of similar products and services, a new business should make a resounding entrance to make heads turn. That starts with having a business, product, service or website name that?s unique and catchy, relevant and easy to remember. If you have no problem coming up with a name that?s all of the above, good for you. Otherwise, you might have to sit down with a friend or partner for a brainstorming session. If that still doesn?t work, branding agencies can take the burden off you, but for a price that can mean up to thousands of dollars.

An online naming platform that has been in business since 2007, PickyDomains already has a strong base of more than 50,000 registered contributors from different regions of the world. For a minimal amount of $50 for a name/domain or $75 for a slogan, you can already start receiving suggestions. Simply register with the site as a client, pay the downpayment (which depends on the service you signed up for) and send in your naming guidelines. If none of the suggestions you receive fits, you can always ask for your money back.

Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile Hunker Down For Hurricane Sandy, AT&T Is Like ?Whatevs?

sandyHurricane Sandy, what may essentially be the biggest storm to hit the North Eastern seaboard in history, is barreling toward us, through the Atlantic, at this very second. It's estimated to cause between $2.5 and $3 billion in wind damage alone, and has already claimed dozens of lives on its way to the States. To that extent, the nation's major wireless carriers want you to know they're ready to roll. Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile have all sent out press releases explaining that they're in full preparation mode for Sandy's arrival. AT&T has made no such announcement.

Mila Kunis Pregnant?

Is Mila Kunis pregnant? A recent photo of the actress and her beau Ashton Kutcher certainly have people wondering if the couple is perhaps expecting a little bundel of joy. Thanks to a pic of Milia sporting a little belly bump, which could very easily be a baby bump, the rumor mill is running ramped that the That 70′s Show former co-stars are going to be parents. The picture that is launching this rumor shows Kunis, who is a very tiny person to begin with, wearing cute jeans and a tank top. It is the tank top that has people wondering if there isn’t a bun in the oven. See when you look at the pic, which you can see here, there is evidence of a belly that looks like a pregnant belly. Now some might say well she has been photographed recently and you couldn’t see a bump. Well this particular tank top just so happens to be the tightest piece of clothing that Mila has worn in a long time. She has been sporting more loose flitting clothing recently and now it looks like we all know why, she could have been hiding something. Obviously as of now [...]

'Lucy,' early human ancestor, likely swung from trees

Among the earliest known relatives of humanity definitely known to walk upright was Australopithecus afarensis, the species including the famed 3.2-million-year-old 'Lucy.'

By Charles Choi,?LiveScience Contributor / October 25, 2012

To help resolve this controversy, scientists looked at two complete shoulder blades from the fossil 'Selam,' an exceptionally well-preserved skeleton of a 3-year-old A. afarensis girl dating back 3.3 million years from Dikika, Ethiopia. The arms and shoulders can yield insights on how well they performed at climbing. (Shown here, Selam's cranium, face and mandible.)

Despite the ability to walk upright, early relatives of humanity represented by the famed "Lucy" fossil likely spent much of their time in trees, remaining very active climbers, researchers say.

Humans are unique among living primates in that walking bipedally ? on two feet ? is humans' chief mode of locomotion. This upright posture freed their hands up for using tools, one of the key factors behind humans' domination of the planet.

Among the earliest known relatives of humanity definitely known to?walk upright?was?Australopithecus afarensis, the species including the famed 3.2-million-year-old "Lucy."?Australopithecines?are the leading candidates for direct ancestors of the human lineage, living about 2.9 million to 3.8 million years ago in East Africa.

Although Lucy and her kin were no knuckle-draggers, whether they also spent much of their time in trees was hotly debated. Uncovering the answer to this question could shed light on the evolutionary forces that shaped the human lineage.

"When looking at how we became human, an important moment in our history was abandoning a lifestyle in the trees, and when that happened is a big question," researcher Zeresenay Alemseged, a paleoanthropologist at the California Academy of Sciences, told LiveScience.

To help resolve this controversy, scientists have for the first time comprehensively analyzed two complete shoulder blades from the fossil "Selam," an exceptionally well-preserved skeleton of?a 3-year-old?A. afarensis?girl?dating back 3.3 million years from Dikika, Ethiopia. The arms and shoulders can yield insights on how well they performed at climbing. [See Photos of Early Human 'Selam' Fossils]

"This study moves us a step closer toward answering the question 'When did our ancestors abandon climbing behavior?'" said Alemseged, who discovered Selam in 2000. "It appears that this happened much later than many researchers have previously suggested."

Researchers spent 11 years carefully extracting Selam's two shoulder blades from the rest of the skeleton, which was encased in a sandstone block. "Because shoulder blades are paper-thin, they rarely fossilize, and when they do, they are almost always fragmentary," Alemseged said. "So finding both shoulder blades completely intact and attached to a skeleton of a known and pivotal species was like hitting the jackpot."

The researchers found these bones had several details in common with those of modern apes, suggesting they lived part of the time in trees. For instance, the socket for the shoulder joint was pointed upward in both Selam and today's apes, a sign of an active climber. In humans, these sockets face out to the sides.

Lucy's adult shoulder sockets also faced upward, suggesting that, like modern apes, her species was?equipped for tree-climbing?throughout its life span. Humans, on the other hand, are born with a somewhat downward-facing socket that gradually moves to face outward as people mature.

"The question as to whether?Australopithecus afarensis?was strictly bipedal or if they also climbed trees has been intensely debated for more than 30 years," researcher David Green at Midwestern University in Downers Grove, Ill., said in a statement. "These remarkable fossils provide strong evidence that these individuals were still climbing at this stage inhuman evolution."

At the same time, most researchers agree that many traits of the?A. afarensis?hip bone, lower limb, and foot are unequivocally humanlike and adapted for upright walking.

"This new find confirms the pivotal place that Lucy and Selam's species occupies in human evolution," Alemseged said. "While bipedal like humans,?A. afarensis?was still a capable climber. Though not fully human,?A. afarensis?was clearly on its way."

"The skeleton of Selam is a goldmine of scientific information," Alemseged added. "We think it will continue to be so as we go further with preparation and cleaning work."

Green and Alemseged detailed their findings in the Oct. 26 issue of the journal Science.

Toys are Tools -Thoughtful Toy Reviews: Saturday MindFeed: A ...

Today is October 27, 2012. ?Where was this website one year ago? ?Basically, it had not been "born" yet. ?But in a few days, Toys are Tools will celebrate its one-year birthday! ? I have a big story planned for that day. ?It's something you'll want to have in your family for generations!

First, please let me thank you from the bottom of my heart. ?The fact that anyone is interested in what I have to say still amazes me. ? (You should see how ignored I am in my own home!) ?But seriously, with the one year anniversary of Toys are Tools coming, I thought it might be nice to share with you what I've learned.

  1. The toy world is full of companies run by people who are passionate about toys and learning through play. ? This corner of the world has the lion's share of very creative inventors, designers, & small business owners.???Some of the toys you've seen on this site are actually the result of someone's second job!. ?I am so privileged to know them.
    ?
  2. I still won't write negative reviews. ?You can call me a chicken, that's okay. ?I've been chicken my whole life and it is true that?once in a while my testers and I have encountered a toy that made us say as Tom Hanks said in Big, "I don't get it." ? Why don't I tell you about those? ?I believe that your time is limited and that you are here to find out what to buy. ?Finding out what NOT to buy doesn't expand your choices. ?I would only write a negative review of something if I thought everyone in the world would be standing on line at 2 AM to buy it but I don't believe that the readers here shop that way.

We Made All Kinds of Things?from?david wells?on?Vimeo. ?(Thank you to NYSCI"S David Wells for writing a song about a toy! And thank you to all the experts who have NEVER BEEN PAID by anyone but have talked to me so that Toys are Tools readers can make the most of out of their toy purchases - and most importantly.... have fun!)

  3. Toys are Tools Readers are VERY VERY SPECIAL.??Some of you are moms of toddlers and you're still here even though I don't write about toddler toys! ?Some of you are therapists and teachers who love the toys like the way a sushi chef loves his thousand-dollar knife. ? Some of you are seriously?really savvy parents. ?Your tips and ideas?blow me away. ?Moreover, you are here to learn something. ?I know this. ?Do you know how many of you DON'T know how to use Rafflecopter! ?Some of you actually apologize for winning. ?We are a seriously interesting community here.
    ?
  4. Blog Reviews: Things that Make You Go HMMMM??? I love writing reviews but I don't think I quite get this blogging business. ?I have encountered blogs "whose opinions are their own" but then they also say "Even though the owner(s) of this blog receives compensation for our posts.." ?Uh, okay.... well maybe that could be true but...?What I've even found is that some "reviewers" may even charge companies by the number of hyperlinks and even photos that they publish in their "review" and yet still that apparently qualifies as "words are my own."? ? hmmmmm.....
      1. But Being Impartial is NOT Easy.??While I feel lucky that most of the stuff we've seen has been fantastic, I am fairly certain that at least some companies, will not send me another product submission if I don't write a favorable review. And believe me I need their cooperation. ?For example, the numbers tell me a review with a giveaway gets read SO MUCH MORE than a review without one (at least within the first month of posting.) ?So I readily admit to you that I have made more editorial space for toy reviews whose companies have a history of giving away items to my readers.??I?should also tell you that irregardless of a giveaway offer, there have been a few occasions that I've decided not to publish a review. ?It's always really cool when the company is grown-up about it and believe me, I've met some. ?Additionally, I still do review products from toy companies who do not offer a product to giveaway to readers and those reviews get my full effort just the same.
      2. Shopping Is Weird Now.? ?Shopping used to be really fun- just a little hard on the feet but still really fun. ?But now for so many of us, a shopping list (especially toys) becomes a list of research projects. ? Even reading my review is more work for you! ? Whatever happened to the salesperson who knew about everything in the store and gave you the best advice? ?I found that kind of person at the Children's General Store in Manhattan where the manager, Michael, was so incredibly knowledgeable, I told him that I was just looking and yet he and I talked forever about toys. ?Of course, I did end up buying something after all, and it was from a company that I had never heard of but Michael said it was good and if you met Michael, you'd ?know he knows everything.
      3. Retailers/Manufacturers- this is for you: ?We are Not Always "Showrooming."? Many?stores don't have someone like Michael and we need him because we have less money and less patience now. ?Still, when I walk into a brick-and-mortar store, I will feel badly about going online to read about something that has caught my interest, because the store manager may think I am doing price comparison. ? But honestly, sometimes I go online because?the box looks interesting but the box is sealed and I want to know more before buying it. ?Some online stores have terrible photos and/or not enough/wrong information. ?Consumers will go to the company page to get more info and then go back to Amazon or another favorite store to buy the product.

Like wine shoppes, I think brick and mortar stores, online and catalog retailers, and a toy company's e-commerce section can start displaying links/QR codes to well-presented reviews/photos/videos right at the product description page or on a little card hanging off the shelf (like in wine shoppes). ?Gold stickers are nice but have you noticed how many there are? I'd rather have a QR code that shows me tons of photos and maybe a quick list of ideas. ?You can put it on a sticker and leave it on the box too! ?Make your best accolades more accessible! ?When a consumer is at a point of making a decision (buy or don't buy), the last page they'll be going to on your site is the "In the News" section.

      4. Consumers: Skip the Reviews Once in a While.?? ?Yes, I did just say that. ?Well, as you can imagine, my shopping time, cross-referencing time, and coupon search time has diminished somewhat and you know what I've managed to do with all the extra time? ?Play with my kids and save my eyes from computer-related stress. ?Besides, making a mistake or being successful based on your own observations and conclusions will always make a better consumer out of you. ?One of the reasons why I am able to write these reviews is because I have made a million mistakes (and counting...)

Oh, and one more thing, if you are showrooming then know that we are all walking one step closer to making sure there are less and less Michaels and more and more defective price scanners in humongous stores where you "save" money by losing your valuable time. ?Actually, there will be less stores to visit- period. ? The end result which is already happening (a lot) is that there will be even MORE BLOGS and "Mom Ambassadors" and I hope you read what I wrote about disclosure. ?There are some amazing bloggers out there and they are super smart. ?But these disclosure policies are so crazy and like I said, ?I have to think about bottomlines too. ?BTW, I used to "showroom" too... I didn't even think it was an uncool thing to do!

      5. Thank Goodness For Testers 3-7.? ?Believe me, I am more greedy than my children. ?I want to see and touch and keep everything but that would really hurt my kids. ?What kid gets 2-3 new toys every week? ?That would dampen their creativity and slow their drive for inquiry and experimentation. ?Not to mention they would become... .. spoiled brats? ?Additionally, if they were exposed to that many toys, I think that would make them terrible testers. ?Don't you think? ?They'd expect way too much from a toy. ?So I am so grateful to the testers and their parents who take awesome pictures, give me incredible feedback, and work hard to figure out how to best use a toy. ? ?For one $12 toy, I may get 15 emails full of pictures and keen observations and that is likely on top of a phone call and more requests from me to please get a photo of this or try playing with something this way..... ?

Will Toys Are Tools Still Be Here in 2014? ? 'Tis Your Call

I am going to need your help to make this website see the holiday season of 2013. ?I do not know how to make money with this site other than doing all the wretched things that I described above and still refuse to do. ?I thought there'd be dozens of toy companies wanting to advertise here but no one has been knocking on that door. But that is totally okay! ?Like I said, there are so many awesome companies out there and the fact that these companies
      1. NOT only send?product submissions?to Toys are Tools (Toys R Who?)
      2. BUT many of them also send review units to an expert of MY choice too??
      3. AND then give me at least one free product (or more) to give away to readers?
All that for a blog with just 600+ Facebook Likes? ?If these companies are going to advertise, they are going to have to advertise at a blog with heavier traffic, right? ?The readership here is a small community and yet these companies have made a huge effort in trying to get Toys are Tools' readers' attention. ??
Conclusion: You Are the Boss You might be asking me how I could keep this going if it is as unprofitable as it has been. ?In truth, it has been high octane fun that has been fueling this engine. ?Personally, I really needed that. Learning all this stuff about child development wasn't exactly a choice for me but I do love it.

In the past two weeks I have written about toys originating from the UK, Japan, Taiwan, and of course, the U.S. ?Next week I'll be talking to you about toys from Sweden and the Netherlands! ?But all this takes a lot of work and luckily I have begun freelance writing at a magazine but to maintain this site as my primary occupation, it has to make?cents?:) because this kind of reviewing and all these photos and interviews with experts and testers takes a lot of time.

How You Can Fuel This Engine

      1. If you shop at Amazon, step in through my door first. ?Just click the square below and then you can bookmark it and use that bookmark every time go to Amazon. ? Amazon doesn't give tons of money and there are a few purchases that don't apply for "commission" but for ones that do, Toys are Tools would get a small commission. It may not sound like much but if everyone does their shopping through this door or any of my other Amazon links- almost all of their purchases will qualify- toy or not- even a pair of snow boots that someone bought this month after coming through one of my "doors" counts! ?The catch is that YOU HAVE TO PUT IT IN YOUR SHOPPING CART BEFORE LOGGING OUT of Amazon if you did indeed go through my link.? If you go through my link today and you put it in your cart right then and there but buy it next month, I will still receive the commission.
      ??

      2. ?Believe me, I didn't even want to do this link thing myself - what if you think I'm hyping up the review just so you'll buy it through my Amazon link? ?I think long time readers will know from my writing that I wouldn't do that. Also, most of you come to read toy news and you are not coming because you are in the mood to shop but the next two months may be different, right? ?Basically, I want to keep these reviews going for anyone?who wants to see them and I need your help. ?I understand if you do the Amazon thing for church or school already but if you don't, then please consider bookmarking my Amazon link and using it forever and ever and ever, okay?

      3. In case you're wondering...., I CAN NOT SEE who made the purchases but I can see what was purchased?and that means so much to me. Of course it's okay if you don't buy anything but if you did, I get to know that I might have helped someone make a decision. ?Remember I have no way of knowing that my reviews influenced you unless you leave a comment.

      4. ?Finally, my last request is that you please share this site with as many people as possible.? ?I think rather than buying random ads everywhere, it is better to attract your circle of friends because Toys are Tools readers are a different breed of people and most likely your friends have similar goals and interests. ? Print out a current review/giveaway and give it to your teacher, OT, SLP, psychologist, friends, grandparents.... ? ? That will help this teeny tiny infant revenue possibly grow up to early toddler stages. ? Or just write on Facebook or whatever is your social media of choice... "Hey guys, I found a really great place that tells you about the best toys for our kids. ?Really fun and educational! Stuff you've never seen before..."

Oh, and if you decide to do this but you often forget, don't feel bad. ?I forget a lot of stuff too! and shopping SHOULD be fun!

So that is it. ? You are all part of this experiment.? ? Collectively, we control the future of this site because despite my passion for toys and writing reviews, soon I will have to start talking to the husband about boring stuff like saving money, college fund, retirement... ugh.... ? If you want to keep this site going a little longer, these are the ways you can help for now. ?Happy shopping everyone! ?May only reputable vendors appear in your path and may you get the best deals ever!!!!

      Yours truly,

      Jenn Choi
      Editor, Toysaretools.com

Disclosure statement: Toys are Tools has not been compensated in any fashion?by the manufacturer of any of the mentioned products?for the publication of this post.? The product was given to Toys are Tools' testers and expert to facilitate a review.? Reviews are never promised.?

How to Prepare for Your Move to Boston - Boston Real Estate Law ...

Moving to Boston? There are many things you need to do to prepare for your move, from researching moving companies to obtaining permits for moving day.

Here's what you need to know:

Finalize your legal paperwork for moving into the house. If you've purchased a house, make sure that escrow will close on or by the day you plan to move in, and make sure you have your keys. If you're renting, confirm with the landlord that the premises are vacant and that you can move in on your proposed moving day. In both cases, make sure that you check the paperwork and satisfy any necessary conditions prior to your moving day. The last thing you want is to be packed and ready to move out of your old place with nowhere to go.

Change your address. You don't want important legal documents, bills or other correspondence to go to the wrong house. Make sure you update your address with the U.S. Postal Service.

Research your mover. The Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities, Transportation Division, mandates that a moving company be licensed with the Division. The Division also keeps track of moving rates on their website. If you want to check up on a moving company, check out the Division's website or call (617) 305-3559.

Get your Street Occupancy and Moving permits. In Boston, you need to get a Street Occupancy permit to block off part of the street for your move. You can do this by going to City Hall in person between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

You need to go to the Public Works Department in room 715 of City Hall. These permits are typically one-day permits from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

You need to get this permit at least three days before your move if you're moving into a residential area, and at least two days in advance if you're moving in to metered areas. You also need to post signs at least 48 hours prior to your move.

Visit the City of Boston's website for more information on Street Occupancy permits.

Get homeowner's or renter's insurance. This is an important step prior to moving in. It won't necessarily prevent you from moving in, unless your lease or purchase agreement requires it.

Danger on nation's fastest highway: feral hogs

Just one day after the fastest highway in the nation opened, a car rolled over resulting in minor injuries. It's unknown at this point if speed was a factor. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

By NBC News staff

Life in the fast lane might not be all it's talked up to be.

That's because drivers in Texas are reportedly running into wildlife on a newly opened section of the Lone Star State's Highway 130 ? which has been widely touted as the fastest road in the nation with a posted speed limit of 85 mph. The 41-mile stretch of public-private toll road, which runs between Austin and San Antonio, opened to drivers on Wednesday.

The San Antonio Express-News reported that at least two hogs and a deer have been hit on the road since it opened. Officials say no drivers were injured in those incidents, according to the newspaper.

The hogs are a normal sight in the area ??Texas claims the largest feral hog population in the country, according to the Express-News.

On Thursday, a driver had minor injuries after the first vehicle rollover happened on the road close to Interstate 10, according to the Express-News.?An official with the Texas Department of Public Safety told the newspaper he does not believe speed was a factor.

This toll road extension was built and is being maintained by the State Highway 130 Concession Co.,?according?to the Express-News.

"As on any highway, we have had sporadic reports?of vehicles colliding with wildlife," a?spokesman for the private company, Chris Lippincott, said in a statement Friday.

Lippincott also noted that State Highway 130 "is?subject to the same laws and enforcement as any?state highway." He said they could not provide comment on the accidents, as they are under investigation.

The new span of toll road is intended to alleviate congestion on parts of Interstate 35, which runs?parallel.

Utah is the?only other state in the country?with posted speeds at 80 mph, with that as the limit on portions of Interstate 15, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

With a speed limit of 85 mph, the 41-mile stretch of toll road between Austin and San Antonio could be the beginning of an autobahn concept in the U.S. NBC's Janet Shamlian reports.

VIDEO: Dad Goes Into Hospital With Flu, Dies 8 Days Later With ...

Guam News - Guam News

Guam - Family members of Joaquin Crisostomo are now seeking answers for the death of their loved one while he was admitted at the Guam Memorial Hospital. His son, Bernard Crisostomo says his father went into GMH with flu-like symptoms and came out about a week later dead with injuries to the right side of his body.

It was a classic case of the flu. Bernard Crisostomo?s father, Joaquin Crisostomo had flu-like symptoms, feverish with yellow stool. Because of his age, at 67, Bernard called for an ambulance and his father was taken to GMH and admitted into the telemetry ward. He then spoke with an in-house physician, Dr. Jeffrey Cruz who told him that his father will be out within three days. That was on October 11. But what happened next still remains a mystery.

Dim lights Embed Embed this video on your site

"Two days later on October 13, I get a call from the nurse saying my father fell. And I said, 'Well how did he fall?' He just said he fell, he wouldn?t explain," says Bernard. "So he fell and from the fall he had an injury to the haed, which I have photographs of. His leg started swelling and before you knew it, his health just started declining every day we went in there."

After his father?s fall, Bernard was then given a series of excuses, none of which answered any of his questions, he says. First he was told by a staff nurse that his father had gout, which would explain the swelling on the right side of his body.

The nurse then later took back her statement and said he didn?t have gout and that they would run some test. But, Bernard says, until this day, he has never seen the results of those tests if they were ever performed.

"So I asked them, I said, 'Is his life threatened at this time because my family in Hawaii wants to come out. Is it life threatning?' They said, 'No it's not life threatning at this time,'" explains Bernard.

The next explanation for his father?s mysterious condition, Bernard says, is that his father was dying because of his dental health.

"The doctor said, "I think your dad is dying because of teeth.' Exact words from Dr. Jeffrey Cruz. 'I think your father is dying because of his teeth,'" Bernard says. "He said maybe there maybe a bacterial [infection] but he said it?s treatable [with] antibiotics. But he said that--he kept avoiding what was arising, he wouldn?t say anything about the leg and the head inuries."

Bernards adds: "He was alert and everything before the fall. After the fall he was kind of dazed and confused. The nurse asked him who my wife was and he said FBI."

Finally, eight days after his father fall, Joaquin Crisostomo died on October 21st. Lacking answers, Bernard then sought to find out how his father sustained the injuries, but more importantly, why he died.

But finding out what happened to his father, Bernard would soon find out, was an arduous task with the run-around he was given. Even as he prepared to fill out a request for an autopsy, a grieving Bernard alluded to being insulted in the way he was treated by the hospital staff.

"Sera Rios [hospital staffer] talked to me for a little bit and said okay, here?s the form, but she said, 'You know this is going to cost you $3,800.' Money is not the issue right now for me. The issue is, why did my father die? That?s all I would like to know. Right now, what was the cause of his death? Because it is unknown and the doc told me three days my dad would be out and now my dad is dead," says Bernard.

Meanwhile, GMH Administrator Joseph Verga acknowledged that he had received a complaint regarding Joaquin Crisostomo?s death. While Verga says he and all of GMH sympathize with the Crisostomo family, a hospital is a place where sick people go and untimely deaths do occur.

However, he notes that his death will be investigated just as any suspicious death is handled. For Bernard and his family, all they want is to know how and why their father died.

"And closure. Most of all is closure to my family. We shouldn?t have other families on our island go through pain and suffering like this on a human life. Especially a human life. I mean if it coudl've been prevented then let?s prevent it. Let?s not shy away from this problem," he adds.

Joaquin Crisostomo was 67 years old. He is survived by his 9 children.

Guest Blogger: Easy Halloween DIY Pumpkin Carving Guide

Guest Blogger #752, Entry #1756, October 26, 2012

Halloween is fast approaching us ? and has to be one of the most fun holiday seasons there are! What could be more fun than dressing up, eating candy and doing DIY pumpkin crafts with your children? There?s nothing more fun than carving pumpkins yourself and seeing the impressive results once you?re finished!

It can be difficult knowing where to start though ? as carving pumpkins can actually be quite tricky! If it?s something you really want to learn though we have a few great tips and tricks to get you started.

Also, remember, if scary, scowling faces aren?t your idea of a pretty pumpkin patch for Halloween ? then fear not! There are loads of different ways you can decorate your pumpkin! Maybe carve out a witch on a broomstick, flames or a cat. All these things are Halloween themed ? but not as scary looking, especially for young children.

Carving your pumpkin

You need to carve out your pumpkin before you can start designing the patterns onto them. The best way to do this is to remove a lid first and then carve the insides out from the lid hole. It?s great to get younger children involved in this part of the process, as it doesn?t involve any sharp knives of cutting. All you need to do give the young ones some big spoons so they can get scooping.

Another great idea, is to saved all the pumpkin that you scoop out. This can be used later for cooking and baking. Your kids will love the idea of eating the pumpkin as well as carving them! You could even make Halloween themed pumpkin pie!

Transferring the pumpkin design

The next step is transferring your pumpkin design onto your pumpkin. You can do this by either printing off some design templates from online resources ? there are loads of designs out there for you to try! Or you can simply buy a marker pen and draw on your own design.

If you?re doing the carving with children but are reluctant to let them handle the knives themselves, letting them do the drawing is a good idea. A marker pen is much safer than a knife after all! Let your children design the pumpkin and then you can go ahead with the actual cutting later on.

Pumpkin cutting tools

The most important thing to start with is gathering the right tools. You want to make sure you have some sharp knives ? the sharper the knives the safer it will be for you. You?ll want to start out by gently scoring the pumpkin along the lines you?re children have designed. This will mean, when you later cut deep you?ll be less likely to slip with the knife ? which means no accidents. Also, at this stage ? remember to keep the pumpkin on a non-slip surface, flat surface.

How creative can you be this Halloween?

After completing all of this you?ll not only have some very happy neighborhood children ? but some very seasonal and decorative pumpkins too! Thanks to Distinctive Doors for this guide to a classic porch decoration.

In veteran-heavy states, military issues magnified

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) ? The far-flung swing states that have the most sway in the presidential election have something else in common ? a large share of military veterans who are getting special attention from the fiercely dueling campaigns.

In a White House campaign this hard-fought, no interest group can be ignored. But veterans are an especially prized group since so many live in battlegrounds including Colorado, Florida, New Hampshire, Nevada, North Carolina and Virginia.

Backing those who have served the country also sends a feel-good patriotic message to the electorate at large. And although veterans traditionally lean Republican, both candidates see an opening to win over veterans this year.

The next president will face U.S. troops returning from Afghanistan and a continuing budget crisis with veterans benefits under scrutiny.

Navy veteran Rob Meurer fears for his own livelihood at a northern Virginia aerospace manufacturer if military spending cuts are enacted during a second administration for President Barack Obama. Defense cuts "could devastate our military and our business," Meurer said.

At the other end of the state, Hampton Roads area Air Force veteran Lawrence Ewing fears the quality of his health care will suffer should the government privatize benefits under Republican Mitt Romney.

"We simply cannot afford cuts to the VA," Ewing said.

The candidates are reaching out to veterans in all nine of the most competitive states as part of a system of targeting voters by specific backgrounds and lifestyle. Veterans account for about 17 percent of registered voters nationally, but more than that in most of the battleground states. It's a predominantly male voting bloc, one with a high propensity to register and turn out, which could help Romney offset Obama's edge among female voters.

Florida has the most with 1.6 million veterans ? one-fifth of the state's registered voters ? as well as nearly 30 military bases or installations. Among the battleground states, Nevada, New Hampshire, Colorado and North Carolina also run higher than average, and have varying combinations of bases, military academies and veterans' centers.

But nowhere is fight over the military vote more apparent than in Virginia, the home of 822,000 veterans. Many live in the shadow of Norfolk Naval Station, the world's largest naval base. The sprawling complex has a population the size of Orlando, Fla., and is the economic magnet of Tidewater region.

Reminders of the military's dominance are everywhere in the Norfolk area. Fighter jets roar overhead of rows of imposing warships docked in Hampton Roads Harbor.

It is also home to the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, in nearby Portsmouth, the Navy's largest industrial installation. And Virginia has production facilities for a long list of military contractors such as General Dynamics, Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman, who together employ hundreds of thousands in the state.

Romney promotes a military buildup and links Obama with a deficit-reduction plan supported by Republicans and Democrats alike in Congress that would cut military spending and cost potentially thousands of defense industry jobs. Romney's running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, also voted for the cuts as laid out in the "sequestration" that lawmakers passed during the summer 2011 budget deal.

Romney says GOP lawmakers made a mistake in supporting the plan. Obama too has vowed that the automatic cuts will not take place.

"Nothing is more important than keeping America strong, and you hear it in Romney," said Bob Anderson, a retired Navy veteran from Milburn in northern Virginia.

Romney and Obama are running neck and neck in Virginia, a state Obama carried in 2008 and which Romney needs to reach the electoral threshold.

"Unlike cutting the military as this president would do by a trillion dollars, I will instead maintain our military strength because that is because America's military must be second to none and so strong that no one would ever test us," Romney said last week at a rally in Leesburg, Va.

Romney also accuses Obama of doing too little to expedite the backlog of claims for disability, pension and educational benefits at the Department of Veterans Affairs. That criticism echoes through a Virginia Beach Republican phone bank, where veterans and their spouses volunteer.

"Veterans always found more for us. We need to find more for them," said Elizabeth Blackley, a veteran wife and Virginia Beach volunteer.

Overall, veterans' issues don't even crack the top 10 in national polls of campaign priorities, where the federal budget deficit, health care, terrorism and illegal immigration run far behind jobs.

The veteran vote has hardly been a bellwether in recent elections.

In 2008, Republican nominee John McCain, a Vietnam War veteran and former prisoner of war, beat Obama, who has no military experience, by 10 percentage points among voters who said they had served in the military, according to exit polls. Republican President George W. Bush in 2004 won 57 percent of voters who said they had served, compared to 41 percent for Democrat John Kerry, a decorated Vietnam War veteran. Bush had served in the Texas Air National Guard.

Romney, who has no military service, led Obama among active duty military and veterans, 59 to 37, in a national Gallup poll taken this month.

Although trailing with veterans overall, Obama leads among younger and minority veterans.

The president points to winding down wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, increasing the budget for the VA and enacting programs aimed at providing veterans with education, employment and housing.

"When our troops come home and take off their uniform, we will serve them as well as they've served us -- because if you fought for this country, you shouldn't have to fight for a job or a roof over your heard when you come home," Obama said last month in Miami.

Obama's outreach in specific niches of veterans that reflect his overall appeal are seen as keys to keeping Romney at bay in Colorado, Florida and Nevada.

"The veterans' community is not monolithic," Obama's veteran outreach coordinator Rob Diamond said.

Obama's team has in turn criticized Romney for suggesting last year he was open to allowing a private-insurance voucher system for veterans' health care.

That suggestion so troubled Vietnam veteran Ed Meagher of Great Falls, Va., that he began volunteering for the Obama campaign. The retired VA administrator now leads Obama's campaign outreach for veterans in northern Virginia.

"I tell fellow vets, if you're willing to say vets should be willing to take cuts like everyone else, I just have a big problem with that," said Meagher. "That's a violation, and it's dishonorable."

John Birch Society protests Belfast's ... - Bangor Daily News

BELFAST, Maine ? The lunchtime crowd walking downtown on Wednesday may have wondered what ICLEI is and why it needed to be kicked out of town, as banners held on all four corners of the intersection of Main and High streets urged be done.

Protesters from the John Birch Society, a conservative group formed in 1958 to push for limited government and personal freedoms, said that the city was a member of the International Council on Local Environmental Initiatives. That group advocates for municipal policies that reduce energy consumption and mitigate climate change.

The John Birch Society protesters ? about a dozen in all ? also drew a connection between ICLEI and the United Nations? Agenda 21, a land-use planning initiative.

But it turns out the city is not a member of ICLEI.

A city committee, the Belfast Climate and Energy Committee, joined ICLEI and paid the $600 annual dues a few years ago to get information about how to reduce energy consumption in municipal buildings and promote similar strategies for residences and businesses, Belfast Assistant Planner James Francomano said Wednesday.

Roger Lee, a three-term city councilor seeking a fourth term, was a member of that committee and said Wednesday it is essentially defunct. The city stopped paying dues to ICLEI in 2010, but the organization?s website still lists Belfast as a member.

Hal Shurtleff of Boston, a regional field director of the John Birch Society who was among the protesters, said he concluded that Belfast was a member by reviewing ICLEI?s website. Wednesday?s protest was still valid, he said after the banners were taken down, because ICLEI is part of a larger effort to limit personal freedom.

?ICLEI is one tentacle? of other, larger efforts to impose limits on personal freedom, he said.

Two women holding the banners joined Shurtleff in denouncing ICLEI, saying the organization wanted to prevent people from purchasing certain kinds of vehicles and ending single residences because of their impact on climate change. Shurtleff said climate change was a myth.

Shurtleff is scheduled to present information about Agenda 21 at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, at the Belfast Free Library.

City officials contacted ICLEI Wednesday to ask that Belfast be removed from the list of members.

Lee expressed dismay that ICLEI was cast as a villain.

?They?re a perfectly fine organization. They?re assisting municipalities all over the world,? he said.

Membership allowed the committee to receive software to estimate how energy use might be cut in municipal buildings. Committee members also were able to attend regional meetings to learn what other towns and cities were doing on the energy-efficiency front, Lee said.

?It?s pretty small-scale stuff,? he said. ICLEI does have ?a particular regimen they want you to follow. Our committee never did that.?

The city has improved energy efficiency at City Hall, and plans to do the same at the police station, the Belfast Free Library and the Boat House, Lee said.

A handout given to pedestrians on Wednesday featuring Shurtleff?s photo and biography noted that ? Agenda 21 will require a profound reorientation of all human society, unlike anything the world has ever experienced.?

During the protest, Shurtleff said planning and environmental initiatives conflicted with the personal liberty protections of the U.S. Constitution.

Lee remained perplexed.

?It?s hard to even understand [the protesters?] position,? Lee said. ?Apparently there?s something wrong with trying to live sustainably.?

Patent losses hit AstraZeneca harder than rivals

LONDON (Reuters) - Three of Europe's top drugmakers reported falls in third-quarter earnings on Thursday, hurt by patent losses, but the common story hides different trajectories at the rival groups.

While AstraZeneca faces years of continuing sales declines, due to a lack of new drugs to replace those losing protection, Sanofi and Novartis are turning the corner.

Revenues at the British group are expected to tumble 25 percent between 2011 and 2016, while Sanofi of France will grow 21 percent and Swiss-based Novartis 9 percent over the same period, according to Thomson Reuters consensus forecasts.

"In Europe, AstraZeneca will be the only company with declining sales in the coming years," said Britta Holt of Fitch Ratings.

"Novartis is in an excellent position, with a full pipeline and strong diversification, and Sanofi is also on the right track."

All three companies are going through a widely anticipated "cliff" of patent expiries that has opened the door to cheaper generics, and the quarter to end-September was one of the heaviest for such losses.

That problem is being compounded by austerity measures in major Western markets, notably the European Union, which is forcing companies to think up creative new ways to sell their products.

AstraZeneca's sales slumped by a bigger-than-expected 19 percent to $6.68 billion in the third quarter, hit particularly by loss of exclusivity on antipsychotic Seroquel, as "core" earnings per share, which exclude some items, slid 12 percent.

The decline underscores the challenges confronting the drugmaker's new chief executive, Pascal Soriot, a one-time vet who joined AstraZeneca three weeks ago from highly-rated Swiss rival Roche.

Soriot acknowledged a key priority was "to restore the company to growth", something industry analysts believe will require both a stepped-up pace of acquisitions and a re-focusing of some marketing operations.

"One of the critical things we need to do in the mid-term is to bolster our pipeline and that will rely on business development activities, there is no question about it," Soriot said during a conference call with reporters.

BETTER PLACE

Rivals Sanofi and Novartis, by contrast, are in a better place, despite also having been through a difficult third quarters.

"Sanofi very simply doesn't have much further sales losses to go," said Fabian Wenner, head of European healthcare at Kepler Capital Markets. "We are back to a sustainable basis to really grow from here."

Sanofi lifted revenue by 3.3 percent to 9.04 billion euros ($11.7 billion) in the quarter, although underlying earnings per share were down 6.1 percent.

The group now expects 2012 earnings to fall 12 percent in 2012, compared with its previous guidance for a decline of up to 15 percent, helped by demand for diabetes and rare disease drugs.

"We are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel," said chief executive Chris Viehbacher.

Novartis third-quarter sales fell 7 percent to $13.81 billion, which was short of analyst forecasts, due to weak performances by consumer health, vaccines and the Sandoz generics business. Core earnings per share were down 8 percent.

The Swiss company's pharmaceuticals division put in a robust performance, thanks to strong showings from relatively new medicines that are the key to future growth, including eye drug Lucentis, Gilenya for multiple sclerosis, and cancer treatments Tasigna and Afinitor.

Debates 'diminished' Obama, says Romney

Romney in Reno (Justin Sullivan/Getty Images)RENO, Nev.?Mitt Romney continued to claim momentum in the aftermath of his debates with President Barack Obama, insisting that the forums boosted his campaign but "diminished" his Democratic opponent's.

"He's now been reduced to talking about 'Sesame Street' characters and word games and misplaced attacks on me," Romney told a crowd of roughly 2,500 people here.

The GOP nominee said Obama had "four debates"?including the vice presidential debate?to "lay out" a plan for the future but failed to do so.

"You can boil down what he's saying to four simple words: 'more of the same,'" said Romney.

For months, Romney has mocked Obama's campaign slogan ("Forward"), telling audiences it should have been "forewarned" instead. Today he revised that attack, telling the crowd Obama's plan "doesn't feel like forward. It feels like backwards."

As he has in recent weeks, Romney expressed confidence he'll win the election, telling the crowd here he understands how to jump-start the struggling economy and "that's why I'm going to win."

Yet in a sign of how close the election is, Romney shook up his usual stump speech. He peppered his remarks with examples of voters in their "40s or 50s," women and younger people who he said would benefit under his presidency.

Speaking in a swing district in a swing state, Romney called the upcoming election a "defining" moment for the country.

"I think the choice you make here in Nevada?and perhaps right here in Reno?will make a difference for the nation, will make a difference for the families of the nation and will make a difference for your family," Romney said.

It was a theme he hit repeatedly while urging his audience to consider the impact of their vote.

"This election is about your family and families across this country, and the choice we make will have an enormous impact on your family," Romney said. "I understand what it's going to take to get this country strong again and to provide the answers that your families need. This is an election about two very different pathways for America."
