6 Videos of Demented Pets ? Or Are They Really Geniuses?, Dog ...

The daily grind can stress us all out. One of the benefits of owning a pet is that they can help us remember to slow down and enjoy the moment. Pets also make us laugh.

Sometimes they make us wonder if they are demented.

If your day has been a little tough, take a few minutes and watch these dogs and cats try out new toys, explore new places, and you be the judge if they are demented or a genius.

This kitten saw the hamster do it and thought it might be fun.

This cat has been working on his figure with a new kind of Diet.

This bulldog really likes his box but? it?s a bit too small.

Nom nom nom! A banana!

Winston is displeased when someone takes his bananas.

I have mornings like this sometimes. This little puppy just can?t get up.

Does your pet have any weird quirks like these ones do? Tell us!

The Biggest Threat To LinkedIn: The Power Of Many, Not One

LinkedIn-LogoGiven how well LinkedIn has been doing of late, the headline for this post may seem a bit out of place. Just a few days ago, LinkedIn yet again exceeded Wall Street's expectations, posting strong third quarter results and increasing revenue for the sixth straight quarter. While its profits are fairly low compared to revenue, they, too, are growing steadily, and the company predicted another strong quarter to finish the year. Nonetheless, while LinkedIn continues to assert its dominance in professional networking (and has started to become a strong, viable business in so doing), the company still faces plenty of competition that could upset its comfortable lead in the space. In spite of plenty of evidence to the contrary, there's a good chance that a "LinkedIn killer" could emerge, just not in the way you might imagine.

Italian suspect can't recall stabbing US student

By Praxilla Trabattoni, NBC News

Updated at 3:45 p.m. ET: ?ROME -- A 19-year-old American student is awake and talking after allegedly being stabbed by a friend who says he has no recollection of the events after a night of partying and drug-taking at a nightclub in Italy's capital, officials said Saturday.

The friend told?a judge Saturday that?he?didn't even want?to go clubbing Halloween night before the Thursday morning stabbing, his lawyer told NBC News.

The victim, New Jersey-born Fabio Malpeso, is "doing much better and is awake and has already spoken to his parents and sibling," Police Chief Lorenzo Suraci told NBC News. "Doctors are more confident on his recovery now."

Malpeso was in critical condition after the?attack, officials said.

Suraci said police hope to speak to Malpeso, who underwent surgery for stab wounds to his lungs and other parts of his body, when he recovers further.

Attorney Vincenzo Comi, who represents alleged assailant Reid Alexander Schepis, also said he was told Malpeso is improving.

"He is obviously still under observation but he is awake and talking," Comi told NBC News. "He even asked about the situation and what is happening."

Earlier: Italy police say?student stabs sleeping American friend while on drugs

Comi said a judge on Saturday confirmed Schepis' arrest and will decide in the next day on a defense request that Schepis be held under house arrest.

Comi said that Schepis told the judge that he "did not remember anything of the episode."

"As he spoke of the events leading up to the tragedy he was crying desperately and sobbing throughout," Comi said. "He kept saying how sorry he was. Every time Fabio's name was mentioned he would break down. He just couldn't explain the events."

Comi said Schepis went "against his will" with Malpeso and two unnamed young men to the club Atlantic, where they were "drinking alcohol, smoking hashish and taking what he was told was ecstasy."

Schepis told the judge that it was the first time he had ever taken drugs, Comi said.

Schepis firmly denied buying the drug, Comi said. An unnamed friend among the foursome gave it to him, Comi said.

Schepis remembers seeing his friend?collapse, Comi said. He said he panicked and became?very agitated as he tried to think of how to help and?recalls?running to the bathroom, fetching a glass of water and throwing on his friend, Comi said.

Schepis said he then?started feeling ill and faint himself, Comi said. From that moment on he has no recollection of going back to the house or any of the horrific events that took place there, he said.

Schepis "woke up in the police station cell."

"Reid is a good kid; he comes from a good family,? Comi told NBC News. "Fabio and Reid were the best of friends. They were both in their second year of university but knew each other from before. Even their parents knew each other. This is another dramatic aspect of the whole tragedy. They were all friends."

"Reid is just a 20-year old kid who found himself in the middle of something he could never even have imagined," he said. "There was not a single sign that could have forewarned anyone of this tragedy."?

Yara Nardi / F3 Press

Alexander Schepis Reid is taken into custody Thursday after allegedly stabbing fellow student Fabio Malpeso in Rome, Italy.

Authorities earlier said the motive for the early Thursday attack in an apartment that overlooks Rome's famous Colosseum was unclear. However, detectives suspect "drug- and alcohol-related delirium" might be a factor.

Schepis and Malpeso are both second-year students at John Cabot University, an American college in Rome, Comi said.

A third man, an Italian in his 30s named Andrea Rinaldi, suffered injuries to his arms and hands trying to defend Malpeso, and was also in the hospital, police said. Rinaldi is the boyfriend of Malpeso's sister, Federica.

The couple?had?returned to the flat about 6 a.m. Thursday and had not gone to the club with the foursome, as earlier reported.

The two unnamed youths with Schepis and Malpeso had returned to the flat, too,?but left before Malpeso was stabbed about 7:45 a.m., according to court testimony.

Pet cat found tied with whiskers burned off in Hull street | This is Hull ...

A WOMAN has spoken of her shock after her pet cat was found tied up and doused in fuel.

Nicola Hardy, 26, said she was devastated after one-year-old Felix was tied up inside the sleeve of a jacket, which was covered in fuel.

  1. Devastated: Nicola Hardy with her cat Felix

Felix?s whiskers had also been burnt off.

RSPCA inspector Karen Colman said Felix was ?lucky to be alive? after the attack, which is being investigated by police.

Miss Hardy, of east Hull, said: ?I feel disgusted that somebody could do this to an innocent, harmless animal.

?It makes me feel sick knowing someone has taken my cat, who we love dearly, and been so cruel to him.

?I was so shocked when I found out what had happened. It is awful.?

Felix was found alive and otherwise unhurt by a dog walker in a field near Buckland Close, Longhill, just hours after he went missing on October 24.

He was tied inside the sleeve of the fuel-soaked blue hooded jacket. A pair of gloves, which had also been doused in fuel, were found in the jacket pocket.

He was identified through a microchip.

Miss Hardy and her partner, Carl Dickinson, have had Felix since January. He had been taken in by the RSPCA after being left for long periods of time by his previous owners.

Miss Hardy said: ?He has had a really lucky escape but we are still devastated this happened.

?He is such a friendly and trusting cat that he will go with anybody.

Because he was left so much when he was younger, he just loves company.

?Since he came back home, he has been a bit jumpy and he hasn?t shown any inclination to go back outside.

?We just want to know who did this. If they have done it once, they could do it again and we wouldn?t wish this on anybody.?

Ms Colman said the RSPCA is keen to find those responsible.

She said: ?What happened to Felix was extremely cruel and the cat has had a really lucky escape.

?When I first heard there was a cat that had been tied in a bag, I was expecting it to be dead.

?Somebody has obviously picked the cat up and, what is really sad is the cat is so friendly that it was an easy target.

?It isn?t clear why they did this ? we believe perhaps they were disturbed and maybe they had more severe intentions.

?At the moment, we have no idea who has done this and why. The jacket the cat was wrapped in is quite distinctive, so we hope somebody will know something about that.

?We would very much like to know who did this so we can make sure it doesn?t happen to any other cats.?

Anyone with information should call the RSPCA on 0300 1234999 or Humberside Police on 101.

ACCT 216

I'm certainly glad that my Accounting courses not only cover how to perform transactions and create Financial Statements, but also include the basic foundations and guidelines for all Accountants.? We are just wrapping up week 1 of ACCT 216 and one of the threaded discussions has to do with the Conceptual Foundations of Accounting.? The figure above is a basic overview of the Accounting guidelines, but a complete description can be obtained directly from the FASB?

So why I'm I blogging about this and why is it important for future Accountants?? It is important to understand that Accounting is more than just understanding what debits and credits are, what a balance sheet, what an Income Statement is and how it is prepared and so on.? Accountants must be aware that they may encounter unscrupulous individuals in their careers and so it is crucial they understand what is right and wrong, what is acceptable, ethical and legal.? Understand your job first and foremost, be familiar with your jobs expectations including GAAP, FASB, IFRS and other guidelines.?

So this week in class we were asked pick one of the characteristics of the Conceptual Framework of Accounting and discuss it in our threaded online discussion. (not a formal paper)

From this list I chose to discuss "Faithful Representation"?

This is my response to the question

The conceptual foundations of accounting are indispensable for ethical accountants, I say ?ethical accountants? because there have been many cases reported in the news where accountants knowingly chose to deceive the company and its investors.? So, although all the characteristics are important and essentially dependent on one another I would chose one at the top ?Faithful representation? and the textbook says that it ?makes the information reliable to users.? (Harrison, p7). But it is more than reliable information; to me it represents the basis for a moral code of ethics where an accountant consciously decides from the beginning to provide only accurate and measurable financial information that will benefit all regardless of the expectations.? So as Accountants (future accountants) it is important to follow GAAP or IFRS guidelines to ensure complete transparency and reliability and in my opinion it begins with ?Faithful representation?.? So, in order to provide faithful representation, the information must be complete, neutral and accurate, otherwise it will misleading and of no value to the decision maker that relies on this information to make financial decision.

The bottom line is we need to understand the Accounting basics, but we must also understand that there are guidelines that are in place that Accountants must follow.? I am glad that DeVry University makes it a priority to not only teach the basic functions but also the responsibilities that go along with being an Accountant.

(AP) ? Don't roll down the taxi windows. Don't buy a remote-controlled plane without a police chief's permission. And don't release your pigeons.

Beijing is tightening security as its all-important Communist Party congress approaches, and some of the measures seem downright bizarre. Kitchen knives and pencil sharpeners reportedly have been pulled from store shelves, and there's even a rumor that authorities are on the lookout for seditious messages on pingpong balls.

The congress, which begins Nov. 8, will name new leaders to run the world's most populous country and second-largest economy for the next decade. Most of the security measures have been phased in in time for Thursday's opening of a meeting of the Central Committee, the roughly 370-member body that is finalizing preparations for the congress.

China always tightens security for high-profile events, like much of the rest of the world. London, for instance, restricted air traffic during the Olympics.

But many of Beijing's rules seem extraordinary, perhaps in an effort to smooth a once-a-decade transition that has already been bumpy.

Bo Xilai, once a candidate for the all-powerful Politburo's Standing Committee, suffered a spectacular fall from grace in which his wife was convicted of murder. One of President Hu Jintao's closest aides was demoted, apparently after his son was killed alongside two partially dressed women in an accident in his Ferrari. Meanwhile, protests over pollution, land seizures and local corruption continue across the country.

Human rights groups report that activists and petitioners are being rounded up ahead of the congress. But the broader security measures may best illustrate how China is trying to leave absolutely no room for disruptions.

The government has blocked searches for the phrase "18th Party Congress" on websites including China's popular Twitter-like Sina Weibo. Internet posters manage to get around that by using characters that sound like "party congress." One substitute: "Sparta."

Taxi drivers have been told to remove window handles, to avoid sensitive parts of the city and not to open their windows or doors if they pass "important venues." Some taxi drivers, but not all, have been told to ask passengers to sign a "traveling agreement" if they want to go near Tiananmen Square.

A man who answered the phone at Wan Quan Si taxi company in the south of the capital said the rule applies to all taxi companies in Beijing. He declined to give his name.

Beijing investment company worker Li Tianshu said she didn't believe colleagues' claims that door handles had been removed until she got into a taxi herself the other day.

"There were no handles for three of the four windows," she said. "The driver told me that their company asked them to do it to prevent passengers spreading leaflets. The driver complained that if they don't take the handles away or the passengers throw leaflets out of the taxis, they will be fired."

Citizens have taken to Weibo to post photos of doors with handles crudely ripped off. Liu Shi, a client manager in a mass communication company, wrote that the taxi driver had told him that power to electronic window buttons would also be cut.

A memo circulating on Weibo warned taxi drivers to be on guard against passengers who may want to cast balloons with slogans or throw "pingpong balls with reactionary words." It was unclear who issued the memo and its authenticity could not be confirmed.

A man who wouldn't give his name at Tong Hai taxi company in central Beijing said it had received orders "from higher authorities" to reinforce security measures and a memo, but he wouldn't elaborate.

Police in the capital are asking that Chinese show their ID cards and foreigners their passports when buying remote-controlled model aircraft over safety concerns, the official Global Times newspaper reported Tuesday.

One toy store owner said authorities had told him to stop selling medium and large-sized planes.

"This kind of plane can't fly over long distances and it can hardly carry anything," said Chen Ziping, holding up a model about half a meter (half a yard) long. "They just told me to stop selling it and I have to follow the order."

The Global Times quoted an unnamed police officer from Aoyuncun station in Chaoyang district as saying that people wanting to buy model planes during the congress should go to the vendor's local police station to register. When the buyer receives approval from the station's police chief, he can make the purchase, the officer said.

Still, they won't be allowed to fly model planes in the city, and balloons also are on the blacklist, the newspaper said. It cited another officer from Chaoyang district Public Security Bureau as saying that pigeon owners must keep their birds in their coops during the congress.

Chen Jieren had a run-in with the security rules Sunday after the handle of his knife broke while he was cooking dinner. He took his ID card to the supermarket, knowing that people must show identification when buying knives during sensitive periods.

"Well, it didn't work this time," Chen said in a telephone interview. "I was told by the police that no more knives can be sold, not even pencil sharpeners. And I don't think the shopkeeper was kidding, because several days ago I saw myself that police were asking the sales assistants in the stationer's not to sell pencil sharpeners.

"I went back and got an old knife and tried to sharpen it. I guess I have to live with it until the Congress finishes," he added, glumly.

Wang Ye, an engineer from Beijing who lives in Shanghai, was planning on returning to his home city to run a marathon, but it was postponed with no word on when it might be held. The date of a marathon in the eastern city of Hangzhou, near Shanghai, was also changed.

"There is no official explanation, but we all know that it is due to the 18th Congress," he said. "(The Beijing marathon) has been held regularly for the past 31 years.

"I guess I will give up running competitions in China and try to attend more abroad," said Wang. "At least they tell me the schedule one year before the event."

In this Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2012 photo, shuttle technician Joe Walsh looks through a hatch of the space shuttle Atlantis at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Fla. Atlantis isn't going far to its retirement home at Kennedy Space Center's main tourist stop. But it might as well be a world away for the workers who spent decades doting on Atlantis and NASA's other shuttles. Those who agreed to stay until the end - and help with the shuttles' transition from round-the-world flying marvels to museum showpieces - now face unemployment just as so many of their colleagues did over the last few years. (AP Photo/Marcia Dunn)

(AP) ? Accompanied by astronauts and shuttle workers, Atlantis made a slow, solemn journey to retirement Friday, the last space shuttle to orbit the world and the last to leave NASA's nest.

Atlantis emerged just before dawn from the massive Vehicle Assembly Building and, riding atop a 76-wheeled platform, began the 10-mile trek to the Kennedy Space Center's main tourist stop.

About 200 workers gathered in the early morning chill to see the spaceship out in the open for the final time. They were joined by the four astronauts who closed out the shuttle program aboard Atlantis more than a year ago.

"My opinion is it looks better vertically," said Christopher Ferguson, the commander of Atlantis' final flight.

"It's a short trip. It's taking a day," he added. "It traveled a lot faster in its former life. But that's OK. ... it's got a new role."

Portions of Atlantis' final launch countdown boomed over loudspeakers before the shuttle hit the road. Employees gathered in front of a long white banner that read, "We Made History," and below that the single word "Atlantis." They followed the spaceship for a block or two, then scattered as the shuttle transporter revved up to its maximum 2 mph. The convoy included a dozen trucks and vans, their lights blinking.

The fact that several hundred shuttle workers are about to lose their jobs, now that Atlantis is being turned over to the visitor complex, dampened the mood. Thousands already have been laid off.

"The untold story of the last couple years, the last missions that we flew, is the work force. I mean, the contractors knew that their numbers were going to go down ... and yet they kept doing their jobs," said NASA's Angie Brewer, who was once in charge of getting Atlantis ready for flight.

Some were too upset to even show up. Friday's event marked the true end to the 30-year shuttle program.

Seeing so many members of the shuttle team "helps soften the hard edge of seeing Atlantis go off to a museum," said astronaut Rex Walheim, part of the ship's final crew.

Atlantis made its way down broad industrial avenues, most of them off-limits to the public. So the trek did not replicate the narrow, stop-and-go turns Endeavour encountered last month while navigating downtown Los Angeles.

The mastermind behind Atlantis' slow march through Kennedy was sweating bullets nonetheless.

"It's only a priceless artifact driving 9.8 miles and it weighs 164,000 pounds," said Tim Macy, director of project development and construction for Kennedy's visitor complex operator, the company Delaware North.

"Other than that, no pressure at all," Macy said, laughing. "Only the eyes of the country and the world and everybody at NASA is watching us."

The relocation of Atlantis was plotted out for months, he noted last week, and experienced shuttle workers took part.

The roundabout loop took Atlantis past Kennedy's headquarters building for a midmorning ceremony that drew several thousand past and present employees, and their guests, as well as a few dozen astronauts. A high school color guard and band led the way.

The mood was more upbeat than when the one-way road trip began four hours earlier and resembled a funeral procession. NASA officials went out of their way to emphasize the space agency's future.

"It's an incredibly historic day," said NASA Administrator Charles Bolden Jr., a former skipper of Atlantis. "But I don't preside over an agency that's in the history business. ... We're in the business of creating the future."

Bolden proudly cited NASA's new target destinations for astronauts ? an asteroid and Mars ? and he hailed the successful start to commercial supply missions to the International Space Station.

The next stop, meanwhile, on Atlantis' one-way road trip: a still-under-design industrial park for a few hours of public viewing in the afternoon. Tourist tickets ran as high as $90 apiece for a chance to see the spaceship up close.

Crews removed 120 light poles, 23 traffic signals and 56 traffic signs in order for Atlantis to squeeze by. One high-voltage power line also had to come down. Staff trimmed back some scrub pines, but there was none of the widespread tree-axing that occurred in Los Angeles.

Atlantis had to traverse just one noticeable incline, a highway ramp. The rest of the course is sea-level flat.

The grand entrance into Atlantis' new home, in the early evening, also was expected to be smooth. One complete wall of the exhibit hall was kept off, carport-style, so the shuttle could roll right in. Construction will begin on the missing wall early next week.

Once safely inside, Atlantis will be plastic-wrapped for protection until the building is completed. The grand opening is set for July 2013.

Total exhibit cost: $100 million, a price borne by Delaware North.

Discovery, the oldest and most traveled space shuttle, was the first to leave, zooming off to the Smithsonian in Virginia in April atop a modified jumbo jet. Endeavour, the baby of the fleet, headed west in September.

And now, Atlantis.

"Although it's the end of Atlantis flying in space, it's not the end. It's not the end for KSC," stressed Kennedy Space Center director Robert Cabana, a former astronaut. "And it's not the end for Atlantis because Atlantis now takes on a mission of inspiration to future generations."

The Galaxy start its MLS playoffs tonight with a must-win against Vancouver, and although LA can beat the Whitecaps without David Beckham at his best, it would be a mistake to assume he can?t get there anymore.

Light exercise boosts mental health of obese ... - Counselling Directory

light exercise could improve mental healthAs well as increasingly the likelihood of health problems such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease, being overweight or obese can seriously impact a teenager?s mental health.

Overweight teenagers are at greater risk of social alienation, low self-esteem and body dissatisfaction than their slimmer peers.

A new study published in the ?Journal of Pediatric Psychology? has found that even if light exercise doesn?t lead to weight-loss, it can significantly improve the mental health of overweight and obese teenagers.

Psychologist Dr Gary Goldfield, who took part in the research at the Children?s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, said: ?If you can improve your physical activity and fitness even minimally, it can help improve your mental health.?

Over a period of 10 weeks, the Canadian researchers studied 30 overweight and obese teenagers in order to measure the effects of light to moderate exercise on their physical and mental well-being.

The teenagers were asked to cycle for 60 minutes on a stationary bike to music or a video game of their choosing.

At the end of the study, none of the teenagers lost a significant amount of weight, but all reported improvements in their academic performance, social competence and body image.

Bullying and teasing for weight issues can be devastating for young people. Dr Goldfield believes that light exercise could help teenagers who struggle with body image develop a greater level of confidence, which could ultimately improve their emotional well-being and help them to perform better in school and social situations.

He added that the first thing he tells parents of overweight children is ?throw away the scales?. Stressing over a number that never seems to budge is counter-productive, and could lead to further feelings of despair and hopelessness.

The thing to do is to tackle the problem from its roots by investigating the relationship the teenager has with food, and how this ties into their emotions and experiences.

Which Age Group Is Most Pessimistic About ... - Retirement Homes

It?s not difficult to find doom and gloom retirement projections and online retirement advice, but a new study from the Pew Research Center which found the age group most pessimistic about their retirements is not Baby Boomers, but those in their late 30s.

As reported by the Associated Press newswire, while about 40 per cent of all American adults say they worry about retirement, almost half of those between the ages of 35 and 44 express concern. And perhaps the most worrying statistic is that three years ago, in 2009, only about one-fifth of this age group said they were concerned about retirement.

If you think that?s surprising, you?re not alone; even the authors of the study appeared surprised.

?I think most people would expect those on the cusp of retirement ? ages 55 to 64 ? would be the most concerned about financing their retirement, (so) the finding that the peak is now occurring among adults roughly 20 years younger is notable,? co-author Richard Morin told the newswire.

One of the major factors related to the pessimism of those in their 30s and 40s is their disproportionate financial loss in the recent recession, where they lost more than 10% more money ? through decreased home values and stock declines ? than the amount of money lost by Baby Boomers.
